French on Friday: Night-time manoeuvres

WAS ET newshound Mark Plummer on the scent of a massive scoop? Something big must have been going on at Posh?

Why else would he ring Darren Ferguson at 2am on Wednesday?

Well, it turns out he didn’t know he had.

“I got up to change the little boy’s nappy and put the phone in my pocket. It must have gone off accidentally,” he said.

I bet Fergie wasn’t amused. He must have been fuming to be disturbed at that time of night.

Not so - apparently he was up as well tending to his little one!

Happy anniversary

IT was a year to the day last Thursday that Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony brought Darren Ferguson back to the club.

We contacted him to ask if he thought it had gone well.

This was his reply:

“I bought him a few pressies to celebrate the anniversary. He thought it was a couple of players but got a couple of Gucci ties instead!”

It drives you mad . . .

STILL on the subject of presents and the Posh chairman . . .

Darragh recently bought a new car for his wife, which should have been a surprise gift.

So he wasn’t best pleased when days before it was supposed to be delivered, a bloke from the garage rang up and asked Mrs MacAnthony if she enjoyed her test drive!

What a pussycat!

LOCAL rugby referee Paul Dickens was spotted carrying a box into his local vets last week and said as he held it up to the nurse: “I’ve been bitten by a lion.”

Turns out the big softie had been scratched on the finger by a kitten he found on his allotment.

What do you expect from a rugby referee - they’re always prone to misinterpretation!

Fistful of sponsorship

PETERBOROUGH Islanders may be doing well in the English National League, but in typical ice hockey style the fists have been flying too. Now coach Richard Wheatley has decided enough is enough.

So to curb his players tendency towards the odd scrap, Wheatley brought in a fine system for those dropping the gloves.

But it appears Leon Groom has found a way to beat the rap.

After his dust-up with a Slough player recently Groom was hit with a fine but rather than stand there grumbling about it as might be expected, he disappeared for a few minutes before coming back with the money.

Naturally this aroused a few suspicions before Groom revealed he had been given the money by a sponsor.

Clearly the team’s backers want a bit of bang for their bucks . . .
