Alan Swann’s World of Sport: on Dalglish’s actions following the Suarez saga & what has Harry actually won?
World of Sport with Alan Swann.
SO when exactly did Harry Redknapp turn into a cross between Bob Paisley and Sir Alex Ferguson? I assumed the rush to install him as England manager was down to all the success and trophies on his CV.
But I’ve checked my Rothmans, Wikipedia and I’ve consulted my top contacts, Twitter and Google, and all I can find is one FA Cup, one Championship title, one Third Division title (25 years ago) and glory in something called the Intertoto Cup.
His Bournemouth side did once knock Manchester United out of the FA Cup, as did his expensively-assembled Portsmouth side, but that’s it.
That’s all he has to show from almost 30 years as a boss and how many of his successes have any relevance to the England manager’s job? None is the answer to save you wasting time working it out.
Redknapp does have Spurs playing great football and getting Emmanuel Adebayor to run around a bit is one of his finest achievements, but talk of him being a managerial great is further off the mark than a Fernando Torres shot – Barry Fry has won as many promotions.
He doesn’t like to be described so, but Redknapp is a master wheeler-dealer (and he’s managed to enrich himself further as a result). He won’t wheel and deal in his next job, not once he’s tempted Paul Scholes out of retirement.
Redknapp also holds the vast majority of a gullible media in the palm of his hand. Good old ‘Arry and his wisecracking ways, always ready with a quote and a quip, even from the front seat of his car.
But that media image is at odds with his trophy count. He’ll find motivating a bunch of over-paid, and past-it, prima donnas easier than Fabio Capello, but anyone believing he can steer England to success probably believes a dog is capable of opening a bank account.
THE clamour for an English manager of the England team is of course nonsense.
If Jose Mourinho or Arsene Wenger declared an interest would we really turn them down for Redknapp?
FABIO Capello is no loss of course. His resignation was met with a wave of indifference everywhere apart from in John Terry’s house and the Sky Sports studio.
I felt relief when I heard the news. Capello proved he had no clue in the World Cup and should have left then.
WHY do football club owners allow managers to have contracts that include bonuses for selling players?
Surely the incentive for a greedy manager would be to force through sales of his better players.
KENNY Dalglish has escaped incredibly lightly for his ugly part in the Luis Suarez saga.
Maybe if Dalglish hadn’t shown such blanket support for Suarez from the day he racially abused Patrice Evra, his player might have not have become so emboldened as to believe he could get away with anything.
Liverpool are in the gutter right now and Dalglish is the man who has put them there. If I was kind I’d describe him as gullible and naive, if I was unkind I’d say he is one of the thickest men in football.
But all day and night on Saturday - and in particular from his golfing buddies on the increasingly appalling Match of the Day - it was a case of ‘Suarez’ letting poor old Kenny down.
Dalglish’s interview with the brilliant Geoff Shreeves straight after the latest dreadful, passion-free Liverpool display against Manchester United, was an utter disgrace, something I guess his Anfield bosses realised hence two press office-written apologies on Sunday afternoon from player and manager.
If Dalglish is genuinely contrite he will repeat those apologies in front of the TV cameras. I’m not holding my breath though.
IT’S great news that David Cameron, a Prime Minister, is holding an inquiry into racism in football.
It’s not as though he has any other pressing matters to concern him, what with the economy, the NHS and the Abu Qatada case running so smoothly.
Politicians are experts on football. They always know when the best tickets for the biggest games are available as freebies.

KENNy Dalglish has made a rod for his own back by supporting Suarez.
The player now thinks he can get away with anything.
@thomwithanh
The only people making a big deal of this (Suaraz business) are the media men.
@BarryCooper4
Is there a bigger hypocrite than Fergie?
Keane’s assault on Haaland, Cantona assaulting a fan, yet both were made captains (of Man Utd) after!
@Poshpointy
For someone that writes for the local rag you are a Grade A Moron! Why try and instigate a situation with your comments!
@pshdecorators
I love Dalglish as a fellow Scot, but he can’t keep defending that sort of behaviour. Or the way Liverpool have been playing.
@MaccaSports
FA should abandon the ridiculous respect campaign. Can’t blame the kids when they watch the pros acting like that, appalling.
@Fig428
I agree with you for once! Stick Steve Gerrard in goal, he’d have the same impact on the team.
@Robbo23687
Did not the FA advertise for the job of manager of the England football team? Did they not appoint Mr Capello to do this job? Surely he should be left to get on with it. It seems to me that the FA went too far with the overriding of his authority.
In my past life I was a teacher, I was appointed to do a job. The comparison is as follows. I teach a pupil to win a scholarship to a University, after the scholarship is awarded, the school governors step in and say, sorry that young man was involved in an incident with the police, so we do not think it is right he should accept the scholarship.
If that happened to me, I would resign, and tell them to get on with it.

Liverpool lost to Northampton in the League Cup when ‘Woy’ Hodgson was in charge.
He obviously thought that the League Cup was beneath him and Liverpool, glad to say he lost his job shortly after.

All quite boring, couldn’t you attempt some proper journalism rather than trolling?
I’ll bite, but just this once. Liverpool’s net spend since January 2011, including amortisation and wages recouped is around . . . ZERO.

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 05:58 PMFunny stuff. Harry might not have won loads but at least his team is exciting. At least he doesnt try and get to clever and makes the decisions that many people would make. At least he like to attack. England wont win anything with the players that we have, so i would take exciting. I might even enjoy watching them from time to time. Dalglish and Ferguson - neither have any class. Fergie - a sir, you have to be joking. His behaviour and disregard for rules is worse than the average Joe - although he has done a good football job....he is no more a sir than I am. And Dalglish - he has just showed himself to be ignorant - that word describes him best. This 10% of sales lark is a disgrace though. It is surely open to abuse.....it as not as if Harry coached Crouch and turned him into a better player. Surely the coaches coached. And if Bazza is on the same at Posh it puts me in a quandry. 10% of 3 mil is a huge amount of money...for a bloke who is an absolute embarrasment every time I hear him. Still do not understand his role....not a manager...director of football...please say that he is not an ambassador

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 01:37 PMI dont know if you know but Redknapp always seems to manage teams that are struggling.he rescued Portsmouth and when he took over at spurs a few years back they were down at the bottom of the prem.Even you swan payed him a compliment back then for what he done.So he should be the perfect choice for England he could turn a bunch of no hopers in a team challenging for a trophy. I watched Suarez closely at Ajax and knew what sort of a person he was before he came to England and i am happy that he landed at a team like Liverpool.Chelsea would have been a good option too as i cant stand both teams and they both have no chance of winning anything with all the money they have wasted.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 01:31 PMIt was so nice of Sir Alex Ferguson to offer his advice to Kenny Dalglish that he should sell Louis Suarez for not shaking someone's hand. I'm sure he would have really appreciated such advice himself from his fellow managers after one of his own players kung-fu kicked a spectator.
