Calls to ambulance service surge alongside the heat

The region's ambulance service's busiest weekend of the year, that saw more than 10,000 emergency calls received, has carried on throughout the week amidst the heatwave sweeping throughout the region.

Between Friday 15th July and Tuesday July 19, the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) received more than 16,700 calls, a daily average of around 3,350.

As temperatures soared into the 30s during the hottest day of the year, EEAST received more than 3,400 calls.

The ambulance service is still urging people to think about which NHS service they need during this period. Remember that if you need medical help and it is not an emergency, please call 111, the NHS non-emergency help line which is open 24 hours a day or see your GP or pharmacist.

The service suggests the following tips to stay safe in the sun:

* Wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat and sunglasses if you go outdoors

* Stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm if you’ve vulnerable to the effects of heat

* Stay in touch with friends, neighbours, and relatives who may be less able to look after themselves

* Drink cool drinks regularly such as water and avoid excess caffeine and alcohol

* Wear sun cream
