A WISBECH-BASED company which started doing business in the East of England is now selling its products across the globe, thanks to help from UK Trade & Investment. Abtec, based at Wales Bank, in Elm, is now supplying precision abrasive products to the engineering, woodworking, automotive and aerospace industries in Ireland, Spain, Holland and Pakistan.

Abtec used UK Trade & Investment's Passport to Export programme which provides new and inexperienced exporters with the training, planning and ongoing support they need to succeed overseas through an assessment and skills based programme.

UK Trade & Investment also helped Abtec develop its overseas trade website: www.abrasivetechnology.net, which can be accessed by potential international buyers.

Company director Mike Ring started the company in 1996 after being made redundant from a job in the abrasives industry.

He said: "When we started out, most of our business was in the East of England. This built up over the years and the company moved into national sales, but we had little experience of the export market.

"With help from UK Trade & Investment, we were able to build up an export and internet strategy and we now have a growing export business."

Mr Ring said the website had played a key part in getting the company known abroad and in generating orders.

David Earp, international trade adviser with UK Trade & Investment, said: "UK Trade & Investment is delighted to have helped Abtec move into the international arena. They have used a number of our services, including the Passport to Export Scheme. I look forward to seeing them reap the benefits."
