A temporary Royal Mail sorting office is being set up in Peterborough to help deal with the Christmas mail rush.

It is the fifth year a temporary centre has been set up in the city.

The parcel sort centre is being set up to sort a significant proportion of the parcels Royal Mail handles before they are distributed around the UK and delivered to the door by Royal Mail’s postmen and women.

The 210 seasonal workers in the centre will support Royal Mail’s permanent 123,000 postmen and women who sort and deliver the mail all year round, including Christmas which is the busiest time of the year for the postal service.

Carol Podzuns, Workplace Coach based in Peterborough, said: “Christmas is the busiest time of year for Royal Mail and our customers. It’s a great place to work during the festive season. Knowing you are help to deliver everyone in the country’s Christmas. Its’ hard work but really worthwhile and there is great banter in the centre.

“If you are looking to sample working life at Royal Mail it’s a good time to do so. It’s also a great extra job for Christmas. We get lots of students and older people keen to make some extra money before the holidays.”

Operations Director Tony Fox, said: “The use of additional parcel sort centres has proved extremely successful over the past three years. They are now an integral part of Royal Mail’s substantial financial commitment in additional resources at Christmas to handle the festive mail bag as effectively as possible.”

The centre will open on Monday.

Royal Mail has set up a dedicated website for people to apply for the positions – www.royalmailgroup.com/xmasjobs.
