Health officials have issued the following advice to prevent the spread of swine flu:

Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing and always use a tissue.

Dispose of dirty tissues promptly and carefully.

Maintain good basic hygiene, for example washing hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of the virus from your hands to face or to other people.

Clean hard surfaces (such as door handles) frequently, using a normal cleaning product.

Making sure your children follow this advice.

Anyone who has recently travelled to the affected areas and is experiencing influenza like symptoms should stay at home to limit contact with others and seek medical advice by calling NHS direct on 0845 4647 or visiting NHS Direct - www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk

Symptoms of swine flu are broadly the same as those of ordinary flu, but may be more severe and cause more serious complications.

The typical symptoms are:

sudden fever (a high body temperature of 38C/100.4F or above), and

sudden cough.

Other symptoms may include:

Headache

Tiredness

Chills

Aching muscles

Limb or joint pain

Diarrhoea or stomach upset

Sore throat

Runny nose

Sneezing

Loss of appetite.

Phone your GP if:

* you have a serious existing condition that weakens your immune system, such as cancer,

* you are pregnant,

* you have a sick child under one,

* your condition suddenly gets much worse, or

* your condition is still getting worse after seven days (five for a child).
