Private business forum calls for firm protection
The Government should help to protect businesses from the effects of the economic downturn, not add to their rates costs, the Forum of Private Business (FPB) is arguing.
The Government should help to protect businesses from the effects of the economic downturn, not add to their rates costs, the Forum of Private Business (FPB) is arguing. The FPB is concerned that scrapping Empty Property Rate Relief has already left many small firms out of pocket. In addition, the burden of funding Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) mean some of the FPB's members are paying more money for little in return.
In April 2008, changes to Empty Property Rate Relief forced businesses to pay rates on empty buildings. More than 30 MPs have signed an Early Day Motion (EDM) against the tax.
Some bigger property companies, such as Segro and Salmon Developments, have even demolished empty buildings in order to sidestep the additional charges. But for most small firms, that is impossible.
