Hundreds of people queued to be the first through the door of the new Aldi store in Hampton, Peterborough this morning.

Shoppers got up extra early to be first in line for the opening offers and the chance to win a 42” HD LED TV, 10” Tablet PCs and 24” TVs, which were handed out to the first 100 customers at 8am.

Some even appear to have camped out overnight to get their hands on the prizes, Amy Price tweeting: “Been waiting since 10.30pm and we’ve now REACHED the 100 mark!!! Only 6 hours 45 mins to go.”

The Aldi car park was full long before the billed 8am opening time and staff were directing traffic away from the car park’s entrance.

Shoppers took to parking anywhere they could, clogging the grass verges of the A15 and causing long queues on the road in both directions.

One man who did make it through the traffic was Peterborough Mayor John Peach, who officially opened the supermarket.
