Time is set to be called on Peterborough’s oldest club when it shuts its doors for the final time to make way for flats.

The 148-year-old XXI club - formally known as the City Club and The City and Counties Club - in Priestgate will call for last orders on Saturday May 2.

Club co-owners Karen Winner and Steve Jason said building owners Everards announced that the building has been sold for conversion into flats.

The City and Counties Club opened in 1867 and traded under the name until 2002 when it was renamed The City Club. The current owners changed the name to XXI Priestgate (a play on the venue address of 21 Priestgate) in April 2012.

Karen said: “We took ownership of the club on in 2006 in partnership with the brewery and have tried to keep it as a venue that appeals to the 25+ crowd in the city and surroundings. It’s been hard work and on several occasions we could have took the route of trying to compete for the 18+ market in the city but we took the view that with all the work going on in the nearby area with new restaurants opening then the area would eventually attract a older clientele. This is now happening and it’s sad to see that we won’t be here to see the final results.

“The Brewery has taken the view that the building didn’t fit into their pub estate and to be fair they have kept us in the picture. They’ve had an offer that meets their valuation of the building and have accepted it.“

We’re putting together a party to remember –we’re looking for some of the past entertainers who have played the club to appear once more for the night

To say good bye to the club is throwing a ‘The Last Dance’ party on May 2, and is looking to attract as many people as capacity allows for the final farewell.

Karen said: “Thousands of people have come through these doors over the years.

The news was met with disappointment on Twitter with Mark (@Pweiterborough) saying: “Sad to see The City Club (aka City & Counties Club and XXI Bar) is closing down in May @XXIBarPeterboro”

Up to 2006 the venue was a members only club and the club is offering a £100 prize for the person attending on the night that can produce the oldest membership card.
