Business Awards 2009: Scott was overwhelmed to be winner

WHEN Scott Weavers-Wright was awarded the Business Person of the Year Award he was both "surprised" and "overwhelmed".

WHEN Scott Weavers-Wright was awarded the Business Person of the Year Award he was both "surprised" and "overwhelmed".Scott was also keen to point out that he was accepting the award on behalf of the Wright family and on behalf of all the staff, which was of paramount importance.

Scott is a partner of Peterborough's hugely successful and multi award-winning Kiddicare business.

Earlier this year, the family-run firm of 35 years won two key awards at the Retail Week Technology Awards 2009 beating big-name retailers JJB, House of Fraser and B&Q in the process. More recently, Kiddicare.com saw double again when it won two awards at the Retail Systems Awards 2009, including the overall winner award.

Rewind to the mid 1980s onwards and it was the time when Scott met his wife, then Elaine Wright. Elaine and sister Joanne are also partners of the business, and daughters of founders Neville and Marilyn Wright who started the business in 1974.

Kiddicare, then based in Werrington only, flourished to become one of the biggest independent baby products shops in the country.

In 1999 came what Scott described as a "massive move", relocation to Mancetter Square, Werrington, to a 15,000sq ft showroom and 100,000sq ft warehouse. The company had become very successful.

Behind the scenes, also in 1999, Scott had started developing Kiddicare.com - the core driver of future growth - by building the software infrastructure.

In 2001, according to Scott, big decisions were made regarding the website, change of courier and change of boxes, to be made mail order compatible.

Two years later, business "exploded" and, thereafter, brought about 100 per cent growth year on year. This, in turn, brought its own challenges for warehousing, staffing and software.

Kiddicare as a retail and warehousing facility was running out of space. It added extra warehousing - at one point there were five warehouses - simply to hold stock for the internet business.

But by 2006 it had run out of space. In that year, the company bought land at Hampton to build on. Eighteen months later, in April 2008, the new building was open for business.

Business Person of the Year Award, sponsored by The Evening Telegraph: This award is given to the person who has shown exceptional personal contribution to the success of a company.
