Business Awards 2009: Larkfleet's delight at its win over very good rivals - Larkfleet Homes
STAFF of Larkfleet Homes were "delighted" when they heard they had won the Environmental Achievement Award.
STAFF of Larkfleet Homes were "delighted" when they heard they had won the Environmental Achievement Award."We are so pleased to be recognised against competition which was very good," said land director David Connolly.
"It is a credit to everyone within Larkfleet with what we have achieved."
Larkfleet aims to help develop sustainable communities and to have a truly sustainable business. Its commitment to ecologically sound practices is having a huge impact on its business, allowing it to retain existing customers and win new ones in very difficult market conditions.
The company aims to supersede the requirements of the Code for Sustainable Homes for habitat creation. It has achieved this by building a hibernaculum for newts and by creating woodpiles to provide a habitat for insects.
Larkfleet carries its environmental philosophy into its own operation by making its headquarters in Bourne "carbon neutral". More than 80 per cent of site waste management across the Larkfleet Group is sent for recycling as well as reducing the total waste generated.
Successes over the past year include a unique demonstration of sustainable building, created adjacent to its HQ, the Kickstart Programme helping to meet the city's targets for improving the sustainability of its housing stock, supporting local companies seeking to develop eco-friendly products and its investment in R+D of green technologies with Loughborough University.
Environmental Achievement Award, sponsored by Opportunity Peterborough: This award is given to the company which can demonstrate a commitment to environmental sustainability and, in doing so, make a contribution to Peterborough's growing reputation as the UK's Environmental Capital City.

Highly commended
QUEENSGATE shopping centre has an extensive Environmental Management System in operation over the site.
Its core principles are to reuse and minimise waste management, improve energy efficiency and to be aware of and educate on environmental impact among tenants, contractors, visitors and the community.
The centre has made significant progress in the last 12 months towards reducing its carbon footprint, increasing its recycled waste from 14 per cent in 2007 to 60 per cent.
The introduction of a Skip Policy, which monitors and reduces shop fit waste to leave the premises, has seen nearly 1,000 tonnes of waste being recycled.
Two large retailers have diverted 60 tonnes of raw food and packaged food from landfill by the introduction of the centre's Food Segregation Scheme. This has been recycled into bio fuel and renewable energy.
EAST Anglian Galvanizing is part of the Wedge Group and has operated in Peterborough for more than 40 years.
Each plant operates its own environmental management system, committed to reducing their environmental impact by reducing pollution and waste while using resources more efficiently.
Its new purpose-built plant, based in Sawtry, has many energy saving features along with quicker access for vehicles delivering steelwork, all reducing the carbon footprint of the business. It also has a revolutionary roof design to supply all process water requirements and recycles its ash skimmings for re-use by the cosmetics industry.
Additional staff employed all live locally and cycle to work, as do their cleaning subcontractors.
