Local businessperson’s diary:
The first job of every day at Speed is our 9am scheduling meeting. Everyone gathers at my desk to go through the schedule for the day. I make sure any deadlines are hit to ensure no job is late. My main task today is to sign off a 108-page brochure we’ve been designing for La Manga Illustrated off to print by lunchtime. We’re printing 4,500 and half of them are being delivered to Spain - the couriers that I’ve organised this with need them by 10am Friday – so a very tight deadline for such a big job. With a bit of pushing and a promise of putting the kettle on once it’s finished the studio hit the deadline (as always!) and I organise getting all the print-ready files sent.
Tonight we have an open evening for some of our top clients and prospects to promote our new brand launch. So, as well as organising a very busy day in the office, I’m attempting to blow up balloons and help put decorations up to ensure the office looks its best.
We manage a lot of printed labels for one of the world’s leading food companies and I’ve had a new enquiry which I’ve been spending quite some time on. The customer has a new product for which they need some samples. I manage to sit down in the studio and get the artwork set up pretty quickly which the customer is happy with and we go to print.
We’re all in bright and early to have a good tidy up after the open evening which was really enjoyable. Well done Ava for winning the competition and the magnum of champagne! We came up with a cunning plan of giving away a posh bar of chocolate to anyone who gave us a referral. We got 10 in total so I collate all the data and pass them on to David to work his magic! The event was a great success and you can have a look at some of the pictures on our latest blog www.speed-net.co.uk/Blog.
The afternoon involves organising the mailing for the remainder of the La Manga magazines and a meeting with a new supplier. I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had a chance to worry too much about the Arsenal v Barcelona match tonight. I think the rest of the team hope for a win too otherwise they know I’ll be in a bad mood tomorrow!
The office is in luck as Arsenal won! I’ve got a bit of a sore throat from the screaming and shouting at the TV though!
Today I’ve got a meeting with our internal web team to discuss some new innovations we’re looking to incorporate into our websites. The two main ideas are a slick online ordering system with a client log-in area and then a systematic referral structure. Both seem to go down really well and I leave it with the developers. Back to my desk and I’ve got a stack of emails and messages to deal with. The latest campaign we’re doing for Norwich and Peterborough Building Society has just been signed off, so I organise the print-ready artwork and send it off with instructions for another tight deadline.
I’m in at 8.30 today for our weekly sales meeting. We look at the week’s stats, how we are looking this month and our conversion rates. I have some follow-ups on some nice jobs which I decide to tackle straight away – everyone seems more relaxed on a Friday! A couple of the follow-ups have turned into immediate orders so my Friday has just got a lot busier, but it’s all good as it means we’ll have another strong month and a great start to the year. I finish a bit late but get home to a post-Valentines meal cooked by my girlfriend Emily – a rare treat!
