Music venue failed to renew its licence

A POPULAR music venue in Peterborough could be closed for more than two weeks after its owners failed to renew its licence.

Club Revolution and District 7, in Park Road, Peterborough, shut last week after the owners “took their eyes off the ball” and its premises licence was not renewed with Peterborough City Council.

However the owners of the two-storey venue, Peterborough Promotions Limited, hope to reopen the club on May 13 at the end of the current refurbishment works.

While the venue is shut, works to create a new bar and seating area in the upstairs Club Revolution section will be completed.

The only section of the venue allowed to stay open is their new Revolution Rehearsal Studios – a rehearsal space for Peterborough bands to practise which was recently installed.

A message on the venue’s Facebook page says: “To cut a long story short, the club is having to close until May 13 because our premises licence was not renewed.

“Due to the current upstairs refit that we have already started and the rehearsal studios being built, eyes were taken off the ball and somehow it was missed that a piece of paper needed to be signed and sent back to the council weeks ago and now we have to go through the whole process again.

“We can only apologise.

“This unfortunately means we have had to cancel any shows from now until that date and we are unable to open for anything, apart from band rehearsal slots, until the new licence has been issued.

“We are really sorry for the inconvenience but we aim to have most of the refit work for upstairs completed before we reopen too.

This should mean a much nicer club for everyone to enjoy and a summer full of great events and live music.”

To celebrate the reopening there are plans for a special Friday The 13th horror-themed Code Red club night on May 13.

A show upstairs will feature The Winter Hours, Whisky Jax and The Crooked Canes.

In order to provide late-night refreshment and regulated entertainment, and sell alcohol, a venue must hold a valid licence with Peterborough City Council.

Before it failed to renew its licence, the venue was able to open and sell alcohol from 11am to 6am everyday.

@16 - don't be stupid. The day you are too old to do something you enjoy is the day you die. Why should having fun be just for the young. You go for it Dalek. You are as young as you feel.

@16 How come ageism is accepted in the music industry but no other industry? Would you say "you're too old to go down the pub"? or "aren't you too old to ba an accountant?"

@ 13 aren't you a bit too old to go there now? Not gonna turn into one of those long haired pathetic rocker types chasing their youth I hope.

I have visited The Underworld a couple of times when my partner played there. The ladies loos there were a fraction better. Maybe I'm just getting old!

Some people might prefer dives to see their favourite bands. I like to have adequate toilet facilities should I need to use them. Locks on the cubicle doors, toilet paper and mirrors are just basic things I expect to have provided for me if I visit an establishment like that.

@11 Er Grunge "went out" 15 years ago and the Park certainly hasn't hosted any "grunge" bands in the 7 years I've been going there - and if you check you'll see it's been hosting bands for a lot longer than those seven years - so, in short, you're wrong.

Cannot wait until they're open again, I went to see the band Glamour of the kill and although it's not my scene I had a very good time.

No money is these grunge dives. Look at Barfly in Cambridge - soon closed down.

@9 The thing is some people prefer "dives" to see bands. The Underworld in Camden is a "dive", but has hosted some of the best gigs I've ever been to. The Park's also hosted Therapy?, Agnostic Front and The Damned in recent years - all very big bands. No they didn't lose their licence, they didn't have the correct licence for playing recorded music - so they could still host gigs, but couldn't play CDs betweeen bands. I also travel to London and Cambridge quite a lot as I don't go to clubs and pubs and only watch live music for a night out - if there's none on in Peterborough I go elsewhere.

I agree Dalek, there have been some enjoyable bands there. I have many good nights there but you have to admit the place is a dive. I'm doing bugger all in Peterborough because I have gotten so apathetic with it. These days I travel to Cambridge, London and other cities with nicer venues to see the bands I like.

Didn't they "lose" their licence a couple of years ago - at the same time as they were doing refurbishment?? If they can forget that then perhaps they are ripe for H&S and EHO inspections as well. Never been there but do they have sound level control fitted for acts??

@5 and 6 - it would be a great loss to the young people. If you've never been there you won't know how popular it is will you? The world would be a boring place if we were all the same and all liked the same things as you would seem to prefer!

Forgot to renew their license - or couldn't afford to? Place always looks grotty when you walk past. In fact that whole street with its iffy looking kebab shops and sex shop looks decidedly dodgy.

so it won't be any loss to the greater population of Peterborough then.

It would be such a shame if it closed. They have some great alternative bands there.
