Jobs are being created at a Peterborough building society that needs more staff to handle its mortgage applications.

The Yorkshire Building Society, which includes the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society, is seeking to recruit 50 members of staff,

It is looking for 50 mortgage underwriters to work at its offices at the Lynch Wood Business Park, where it already employs 430 people.

Cara Holbrow, lending manager at Yorkshire Building Society Group, said: “Taking on these additional underwriters reflects our intention to maintain the great service that our customers expect as we seek to grow and lend more over the coming years.

“They will help us to assess mortgage applications efficiently and ensure we continue to take responsible lending decisions even as we lend more.”

The salary for lucky applicants joining the society as an underwriter is up to £22,500 a year depending on experience while for underwriter managers it is up to £35,000 a year.

Ms Holbrow said: “It is a terrific boost for the local economy that we are seeking to take on 50 new recruits and it shows we are continuing to grow as a successful financial services organisation.

“We are looking for applicants with very good analytical skills, who are able to communicate in a clear way and demonstrate the kind of positive values that sit at our heart as a mutual organisation.

She added: “Previous experience of dealing with mortgage application or underwriting would be an advantage but is not essential as full training will be given to all successful applicants.”

The announcement is further good employment news for Peterborough.

It comes hot on the heels of new figures that show in July this year the nunber of Jobseeker’s Allowance claimants in the city fell to 2,185 compared to 2,255 claimants in the previous month.

The Yorkshire Building Society Group is the second largest building society and one of biggest mortgage lenders overall in the UK.

More information about the roles will be provided by the society during a jobs fair that will be held at the Bull Hotel in Westgate, Peterborough, on August 26 from 10am to 2pm.

Details about the vacancies are also available on the group’s website www.ybs.jobs.
