YOUNG people are being given an opportunity to spend a day shadowing members of Peterborough City Council as part of a week-long programme of events for Local Democracy Week, starting today.
The week, which has been organised by the council’s young people’s service and democratic services, aims to raise awareness of local democracy and encourage involvement and participation from school children across the city.

llor young people will be able to find out more about the city’s decision-makers and how local democracy works.
The week’s events will also give local councillors a chance to meet their younger constituents and discuss their needs.
Youngsters will be treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the Town Hall and will take part in a question and answer session to find out more about the role of councillors.
The experience also provides an excellent opportunity for councillors to hear about youth issues.
Spokesman for young people Councillor Matthew Dalton said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to find out what the council does and get an insight into the decision-making process.
“We are also looking for a new youth MP to represent the city at the UK Youth Parliament next year. Hettie Davies did a great job this year as our youth MP and we want lots of candidates to come forward this year in a bid to follow in her footsteps.”
Peterborough’s new member of youth parliament (MYP) will be chosen at the UKYP elections at the Town Hall on February 26.
