PROTESTERS battling to save Woodston post office are to take to the streets to check the handiness of the nearest alternatives.
The post office in Oundle Road is earmarked for closure. Before the deadline of August 26 when the consultation ends, campaigners want to highlight the difficulties people will have in using the other alternatives in Fletton High Street and the city centre.
The Phoenix Residents Association, which covers east Woodston, is calling on mobility scooter riders, wheelchair users, mums with buggies and the elderly to take part in a test trip to the other branches on Monday, August 18 from 11.45am.
It plans to photograph the problems they encounter and submit the pictures as part of the consultation. Association chairman Jenny Gardner said: "The Post Office is saying the other branches are accessible to people with disabilities and the elderly in our area, but we think that's wrong and we want to prove that to them.
"A number of people with buggies, mobility scooters and wheelchairs and the elderly are going to try to get to the branches, and we would like to hear from concerned residents who would like to come and join us on the day.
"The post office in Fletton High Street is quite small and it's difficult to park there already, and the city centre post office is moving."
City councillor for Fletton, Cllr Frances Benton, said residents could write individual letters explaining their opposition.
Although able-bodied, she will test the problems for some customers by hiring a mobility scooter.
She said: "We have got to prove that we can't get to Fletton High Street as easily as they say we can."
