UPDATE 11.15AM: A man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder after two women suffered serious injuries in an incident at a Peterborough home.
Today, Anburaj Arjunan (31), of Midland Road, was due to appear before Peterborough magistrates accused of two attempted murders after the incident in a terraced home early on Saturday morning (July 26).

The injured women, who neighbours said were mother and daughter, were rushed to Peterborough District Hospital with head injuries before being transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge. The younger woman, aged 31, is unconscious and in a critical condition. The older woman's condition was today stable.

Shocked neighbours have spoken of their horror after the drama which began in Midland Road in the early hours of Saturday, when neighbours heard screams and loud noises coming from the house.

Police were called, and cars carrying officers with dogs and three ambulances arrived at the scene at around 6.30am on Saturday.

The front of the terraced home was sealed off with police tape and two officers stood guard outside as detectives searched for clues inside and spoke to residents, including deputy mayor Gul Nawaz, who was woken by the screams.

Neighbours said the house was occupied by a family of three – a couple and the women's mother.

They were thought to be of Indian origin and had moved in about three months ago.

A woman, who didn't want to be named, said: "I was upstairs and heard shouting. I looked out of the window and saw police outside.

"There was blood everywhere – on the walls, the floor. That image won't go out of my head.

"They used to sit on the wall of the garden a lot. I spoke to them yesterday. I'm shocked. They were lovely and very friendly. They had been living here three months. I think they were both qualified doctors. The daughter was lovely."

Deputy mayor Cllr Gul Nawaz, who lives next door, said: "I heard screaming in the early hours of the morning from the top bedroom on the road side.

"Suddenly, a police car came and I could hear knocking. I heard screaming and banging again.

"The older lady came out with blood on her. It was very upsetting.

"They are a fantastic family. I had no complaints from them.

"I think they worked in a hospital.

"It looked like they were seriously injured. I saw a lot of blood in the sitting room. They were a lovely, happy family.

"The whole street is very upset. When they moved in, they were doing the lawn in their garden and I thought they looked like good people."

Another neighbour, Peter Harrison, said: "I was fast asleep, but my wife woke me and mentioned she had heard the police Alsatian barking.

"I used to see the older woman standing in the front garden combing her long hair.
