AN angry village postmistress who fears the heart being ripped out of the community has won the support of her local MP as she joins The Evening Telegraph's Hands Off Our Post Office campaign.
Deena Howard, from Ramsey St Mary's post office, signed the petition in a bid to save her shop, which is at the "heart of the community", and received a visit from Shailesh Vara, MP for North West Cambridgeshire.

The post office, in the High Street, is one of 26 across Cambridgeshire, including three in Peterborough and six in the immediate area, to face the stark prospect of shutting up shop, after an announcement by Post Office Ltd last week.

Since then, support to keep them open has spiralled, with community leaders and customers voicing their concerns.

Now postmasters whose jobs are at risk are calling on members of the public to drop into their nearest under-threat branch and sign The ET's petition.

While putting her name on our petition, Mrs Howard said: "This is a growing community and our busy post office is at its heart.

"Local people were extremely disappointed by the news we are threatened with closure, but I hope if we pull together a good argument can be made to keep the post office open."

Mr Vara has also shown his support for the facility, which he says is essential to residents in the rural community, not only in terms of postal services but also because it is a focal point for the community.

Mr Vara said: "The closure of the post office would be a disaster for this small community.

"For years, the post office has represented the centre of village life, and the effects of its removal will be felt long into the future.

"I hope that Post Office bosses can be persuaded to alter their decision in this case."

County councillor Susan Normington, who represents the Ramsey ward, said: "The closure of Ramsey St Mary's post office will hit the most vulnerable people in our community hardest, such as the elderly, infirm and young families without cars.

"It is an utter disgrace that the Government is allowing this to happen."

Huntingdonshire District councillor for Ramsey Phillip Swales added: "Closing a successful post office, which provides essential services to village residents, is something to which I am totally opposed."

The Evening Telegraph's Hands Off Our Post Office campaign has gathered pace, and now is the time for you to have your say during the public consultation period, which ends on August 26.

This is lunacy - St. Marys is already a large village spread over a considerable area and the nearest Post Offices for those without cars are at either Whittlesey or Ramsey itself. Either one takes a long bus journey (via Upwood for Ramsey), which if you do not have the benefit of free travel is also very costly.
