Thousands stranded as tour firm collapses

British holidaymakers have been left stranded after the UK's third largest tour operator went into administration and grounded all flights.
XL Leisure Group declared bankruptcy having failed to secure a rescue package amid deep financial difficulties
In a statement on its website, the group said it had been hit by rising fuel costs and the credit crunch. It said all its flights have been cancelled and its fleet of aircraft are now grounded.

XL Airways provides flights to more than 50 destinations across Europe, America and Africa.

Passengers yet to travel should make alternative arrangements, while those already on holiday will be brought home on flights arranged by the Civil Aviation Authority, the statement said.

Customers who booked through four tour operators - The Really Great Holiday Company, Kosmar Holidays, Freedom Flights, and Aspire Holidays - are protected under the Air Travel Organiser's Licenses (ATOL) scheme, it said.

However, those who booked direct with an XL Group company are urged to contact ATOL immediately.

The statement said: "The companies entered into administration having suffered as a result of volatile fuel prices, the economic downturn, and were unable to obtain further funding.

"The joint administrators cannot continue trading the business and therefore all flights operated by the companies have been immediately cancelled and the aircraft grounded."

XL's demise is the latest blow to the British travel industry and follows the collapse of budget airline Zoom last month. Thousands of transatlantic passengers were left stranded after flights to and from Canada and the US were grounded as it called in the administrators.

Even Deeping Travel had an insolvency petition against it. Doesn't seem to be a safe industry!!

Yes, I lost my money. I paid with visa debit, so no card protection, I also booked direct with XL.com so no ATOL cover, money gone.
I have rearranged my (flight only) holiday, though I can ill aford it.
Game on for me but not those unfortunate souls, 1,700 of them, who are now unemployed, good luck and good hunting to all of them. Flight deck, cabin crew and administrators.
They are a grand bunch of folk.

Surely the firm knew it was in trouble possibly last year.
It is realy sad when a firm decides to close just like that and leave thousands in debt or stranded.
So why are they allowed to trade? even though they cannot pay there bills, it is not a overnight decision,it is a long term one. Something Governments must address is by asking the question you knew you where in trouble yet you still traded.

The trouble is Cyd, they can't wind down slowly and operate with hardly any passengers. Insolvency causes a full stop, whatever date that is.

XL should have least been allowed to bring the passengers/aircrew that are now stranded home that would have cost the CAA far less and aided the "airlift"

We flew with XL recently and have never experienced such a disorganised company, no communication as to why flights hadn't left, using planes that had known faults etc.. looking back I think that this was the start of the end.

Bad luck to all who have lost out.

DonB - you may want to check. Visa debit cards are covered according to the Sky website for a refund. I hope you do get your money back

Dan, I rang the card company this morning, they told me no dice.

wanesill, are you a flight engineer? I do not recall passengers being advised of aircraft faults. Did the plane have wings? Were the engines hanging off? lol.

Sorry to hear that Don, that's not good. I just hope that the Administrators can get you something in due course, not that it helps now I realise.
