The youngsters have started to produce some fabulous quilts as part of an after-school enrichment class, which, once completed, will be raffled off for charity.

Subject leader of textiles Rebecca Williams said: “It was organised by my colleague Josie Watling, who works with charities based in India. John Lewis in Peterborough gave us scraps of fabric left over from displays and other things for free and the group is putting them together to make a quilt.”

The 10 youngsters take a lucky dip from the fabric bag and then use the sewing machines to stitch the quilt together, and are hoping their efforts will help those less fortunate than themselves.

She added: “The pupils are really enjoying it, and it is a great way for them to learn new skills while raising money.”

Learning development coach at Peterborough’s John Lewis store, Chris Briggs said the store had been delighted to help the pupils.

He said: “It has allowed us to find a good home for the remnants of material we had spare and also it is great that the money raised by their hard work will benefit charities abroad.”
