A TEENAGER crashed a 180mph sports car into the back of a motorbike – while travelling at just five miles an hour.
Faisal Abbas Gul (19), of Wake Road, Eastgate, Peterborough, crashed the Porsche 911 Carrera on May 31 this year, after pulling away from traffic lights too quickly.

Peterborough Magistrates' Court heard how Gul's brother had rented the £80,000 sports car.

Despite not having a driving licence, permission or insurance to drive the car, Gul picked up the keys from his brother's room and went for a drive.

Anthea Harris, prosecuting, said: "He needed to collect his younger sister, and wanted to drive the Porsche, so he just took the keys while his brother was asleep."

While he was driving the car, Gul came up behind a Yamaha motorbike waiting at a set of traffic lights.

Mrs Harris said: "The motorcyclist was waiting at the red light, when he heard a bang. His handlebars crossed, and he fell to the floor, badly spraining his ankle.

"He then heard the sound of the engine starting up before seeing a silver Porsche 911 drive off."

A police search later found the car in Eastfield Road, Peterborough, with damage to the front and side panels.

When Gul was questioned by police, he admitted he had been in the accident, and had driven off without stopping.

Mrs Harris told the court: "As the lights changed to green, he lifted his foot off the clutch, but he was wearing slippers and came off too fast.

"He wanted to apologise, as he had been involved in a car accident before, but he said he just panicked."

Gul appeared at the court yesterday charged with aggravated vehicle taking, failing to stop after an accident, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

Mitigating, Oliver Barrett told the court. "He has pleaded guilty to the offences at the first opportunity, and accepts that this is a very serious matter.

"He admitted the offences to police and showed remorse in interviews."

District Judge Ken Sheraton sentenced Gul to four weeks in prison for taking the car, and four weeks for failing to stop after the accident, which was suspended for 18 months.

Gul was also banned from driving for a year, ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work, and told to pay costs of £75.

He was also told to pay the victim of the accident £150 for repairs to the motorbike.

No penalties were given for the licence and insurance offences.

Right so driving without insurance or a licence is not punishable in Potty Peterborough anymore then? Strange I thought it was against the law?

Let's face it, the cost of a fine for no insurance is a fraction of the cost of the insurance. Fines given for this should be IN ADDITION TO the cost of a years insurance for that driver in that car.

Typical magistrates in this city. Why punish when we can give more chances. He has done this and won't be long until he does something worse soon.

A car is a weapon. If not trained you will kill with it. How does aggravated vehicle taking, failing to stop after an accident, driving without a licence and driving without insurance not warrant 2 years in prison and a lifetime driving ban?

He should also have been done for failing to stop and assault on the motorbike rider.

What a joke - in the States he'd be doing 5-10 years now.

According to this report,Faisal Abdul Gul had been in an accident before. This being so,the Porsche incident would have been his 2nd. and he has no driving licence.
Whether he was doing 5 mph or 55 mph is totally irellevant. He could have seriously injured or killed someone. I do hope that the company that hired out the Porsche are taking punitive action against the "hirer",
Like other readers.I aam disgusted at the miniscule punishment Gul has been given. The same offences in Singapore would have been rewarded with at least five years in prison( Not at all like the prison hotels in UK!) and possibly a flogging.
MAGISTRATES - PLEASE START GETTING TOUGH ON CRIME!

Far too lenient. However, he now has a criminal record which will blight his name for some years to come.

Our local Magistrates get dafter and dafter.
Criminals seem to get far better treatment than their victims. Why?, are our local Magistrates losing their marbles,or are they being bribed by the Government to give more lenient sentences, so that our gaols can cope with all the criminals.

POLICE OFFICERS risking life and limb, only to be made look silly in court.
by the courts, these young men just laugh at the system and the officers that try to enforce it, this criminal should have been senr to a higher court for sentencing, hopefully he would have recieved a long stretch, the weapon he was in charge of was more dangerous the a loaded gun, you judges do what your paid for hand out punishment that fits the crime.// in other cases you do destroy peoples lives by taking thier licences away!! what happened here???
