A TEENAGE biker is today fighting for his life after a crash involving a van which was then driven from the scene of the accident.
The family of the 17-year-old are today at his bedside in a head injuries unit at Addenbrooke's Hospital, in Cambridge, where he was transferred to following the accident.

The incident happened at 8.20am yesterday, when the van and the bike were in collision in Lawson Avenue, Stanground, Peterborough.

The young biker flew off the bike, which still had a learner plate attached to it, skidded almost 50 metres and came to rest on the kerb near the wall of a nearby garden.

The victim, who is believed to be from Stanground, was rushed to Peterborough District Hospital, but was transferred to the Cambridge hospital to be treated for serious head injuries.

He remains in a critical condition.

After the accident police launched a huge operation to track down a cream-coloured van.

The stretch of road was strewn with debris from the crashed bike and van.

Police, who arrived at the scene within minutes of the incident, immediately condoned off the area and carried out a fingertip search.

Stunned neighbours spoke of their shock at the crash in an otherwise quiet neighbourhood.

Alex Russo, whose house was opposite the scene of the crash, said: "I heard a bang and looked through the window. I saw the bike and noticed a neighbour across the street calling for an ambulance.

"I have never seen an accident on this stretch of road before, it's usually very quiet."

Margaret Elmer, who was about to go shopping, heard the crash. She said: "At first it was difficult to see what had happened.

"A couple of people were standing by a body and a bike was in the middle of the road. It looked serious."

Tom Livigna (57), of nearby Southfields Drive, said police were near the road all morning, adding: "I came back home for lunch and officers were still investigating. I got a text at work to say there had been an hit and run."

A 20-year-old man from Peterborough has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and driving while disqualified.

A 21-year-old woman from Peterborough has also been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Both were released on bail, without charge, and must return at Thorpe Wood police station on July 30.

n Anyone who has any information about the crash should call police on 0845 456 4564, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

The driver was disqualified - why do the courts not make sure anyone caught driving when disqualified is jailed. This poor guy is in hospital due to some idiot who thinks he is above the law.

As for the person who assisted him, I hope she gets jailed too.

Fingers crossed the guy recovers.

My thoughts are with his family, this is something that doesn't happen in stanground often. They best get sent down, this lad might not get a chance again with life he he does not recover, and if he doesn't they will get sent down for manslaughter surely?!
Send them down and throw the key away!

Hope he recovers

Yet another idiot with 4 wheels who can't be bothered to look out for us two wheelers and whom by their negligence has likely destroyed someone else's life and then to top it all then runs off like a wimp & coward.

If it turns out as it seems that the driver was already disqualified and failed to stop (and unlikely to have insurance) I hope they nail him/her to the wall.

Hardly a time for anti-car rhetoric. There are just as many idiotic and irresponsible people on two wheels as there are on four. You'll get law breakers on any number of wheels.

Good luck to the lad, hope he pulls through. As for the van driver, lets get him named and plastered all over the media !

what ever happened to being innocent, until proven guilty. So what gives you the right to say people should have life in prision. No one has been proven guilty. judge yourself before you judge others. These people are under suspition, what gives you the right to judge these people, they have only been arrested under suspition, and have not been charged. Perhaps you should judge yourself before you judge other people.
Unless you know the full story you should keep your comments to yourself.

I really hope the lad pulls through, as to all you people passing judgement, you make me sick. Where you driving? do you know the whole story? Do you know who the guilty and innocent are ? Your answers are proberly a big fat NO! Yes the driver was in the wrong for not stopping and driving in the first place but have you ever been in that situation??? Ask yourself what would you do? Please dont judge before any of us know the truth what ever happened to innocent untill proven guilty. Best wishes to the familys involved.

Pboro mummy-yes you are right-dont judge till you know the whole story, but as i read it -HE WAS DRIVING WHILST DISQUALIFIED- ie HE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DRIVING how would you feel if it was your child who was fighting for his life because someone decided they couldnt be bothered to obey the law??????
Laws are not there to only be obeyed when it suits you.

What if it was night and no-one heard??

When you have a loved one killed or seriously injured by someone in a car then you would be the first to jump and scream about the law not working.

Drivers should give more respect to other road users,it only takes one hit and there is no going back.
