SIX houses were cordoned off and four people evacuated from their homes following reports of a gas leak.
Police, firefighters and National Grid engineers were called to Rutland Terrace in Stamford, at about 2.30pm on Thursday (23 April), after a 4in metal gas pipe was cut through while a water main was being disconnected.
Motorists were urged to avoid the area, and the road was also closed both ways as a precaution while engineers safely repaired the pipe.
After three hours, residents were able to return to their homes and the road reopened at about 5.10pm.
Gas supplies were not cut off to any of the properties.
A spokesman from Lincolnshire police said: "A total of six houses were evacuated.This was done as a precaution, and no one in the vicinity was thought to be in any danger.
British Gas estimated it would take two to three hours to rectify the problem.
"Officers, along with Fire and Rescue were at the scene.The road was closed and houses on both sides of the street were evacuated as a precaution. "
