A car boot sale at the city's Wirrina car park on October 26 could well be the last at the site.
Tony D’Alessio, who runs the sale, has a lease for use of the car park until the end of December, although permission to run a car boot sale has always been only from March to the end of October.
It is now understood the lease may not be renewed.
Mr D’Alessio said negotiations were ongoing for the Bishop’s Road site.
A spokesman for Peterborough City Council would only say they were “in discussions with Mr D’Alessio over the lease at the present time”.
The Evening Telegraph reported on Tuesday that East ward councillor Stephen Goldspink had called for the closure of the site’s Sunday and Bank Holiday boot sales after complaints from people living nearby.
Cllr Goldspink had raised concerns with the council about cars churning up the grass verges, cracked pavements and noise as a result of the car boot sales.
He told The ET that the “few thousand pounds” it earned the city council each year far outweighed the cost to the environment and the quality of life for the people living nearby.
His comments sparked a debate with ET readers, some of whom pointed out that while there is a credit crunch, a car boot sale may be just the kind of place people need for finding bargains.
Today, Mr D’Alessio confirmed that the sales will go on, but only for definite until the end of the current season, which finishes at the end of October.
Mr D’Alessio leases the site from the city council to run a car park, but the lease also covers the ability to run car boot sales from March to October on a weekly basis.
He said he would like the arrangement to continue, but admitted he may not be allowed to run the car boot sales, even if the lease for running the car park is renewed.
Mr D’Alessio said: “We have people coming in from far afield, and they will be extremely disappointed to find there is no car boot sale.”
