Shopper stabbed in city centre melee

Update 8pm Sunday: A Peterborough man has tonight (January 6) been charged with three offences of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and dangerous driving.
Mohammed Redha Zouaoui is due to appear before magistrates on Monday.

Of the three pople injured during the incident, two men are in a stable condition in Peterborough District Hospital, while a woman has been released after treatment.

Saturday report:
In shocking scenes, a shopper was stabbed in Peterborough city centre this afternoon (Saturday).

The stabbing happened opposite the eastern entrance to Queensgate shopping centre, in Long Causeway, as hundreds of shoppers watched in horror.

Moments earlier a man driving a car down Long Causeway is believed to have struck two shoppers, a man and a woman.

Stunned members of the public surrounded the car and tried to drag the driver out of the vehicle.

There were screams when the man wielded a knife, which one eyewitness said was eight inches long.

Other eyewitnesses say the man then stabbed a member of the public in the crowd.

People fled the scene fearing further stabbings and the man jumped into his car.

All of the victims have been taken to hospital but none are thought to have sustained life-threatening injuries.

At 4.45pm, a 100-metre stretch of the city centre, from Sports Soccer to Lloyds TSB was still cordoned off as officers investigated the scene.

Six police vehicles were parked up in Long Causeway, while 16 officers guarded the blue and white tape cordon.
