WITH shoppers heading to Peterborough's stores to find the perfect gifts, the true meaning of Christmas can be easily lost amid the trinkets and tinsel.
But a new shop will be springing up in Long Causeway on December 3 to help shoppers get back in touch with the Christmas story.

Instead of selling festive gifts Love Came Down At Christmas will be giving away goodies such as mince pies and gingerbread biscuits.

And those passing by can also have their photos taken in the Nativity scene in the shop unit's window alongside a real-life donkey.

The photograph will be available to view and download for free on a website alongside information about local church carol services, a reading of the Christmas story from the Bible and stories of what Christmas means to people today.

Clive Morton, who is a member of Churches Together, said the new shop, which is one of several being set up nationwide, was a great idea.

He said: "There will be a crib scene set up in the window and the public can set up photo, dress up as nativity characters and put the picture on the website.

"It's a pure giveaway initiative - there is nothing for sale.

"Christmas has become too commercial so this is about showing people the real meaning of it."

The shop will be open for three weeks and is part of the Get In The Picture initiative which is backed by the Baptist Union of Great Britain and a number of Christian denominations and organisations.

The Head of the mission department in the Baptist Union of Great Britain Rev Ian Bunce said: "Every Christmas the story of Jesus still echoes round England.

"Get In The Picture is a simple, helpful way of taking that echo and making it real for people.

"It's public, it's visual, it's creative, it's fun and it's effective."

It's about time people were reminded about the real Christmas. I am sure the donkey will be well cared for. Have the council issued them with a special bin for the inevitable droppings?

Have the council issued them with a special bin for the inevitable droppings?

It's a purple and yellow wheelie bin which will be collected on the second Tuesday after each full moon. Unless that day happens to be an uneven number in which case it will be collected on the Wednesday before said Tuesday. All this is assuming that the binmen are not caught up in roadworks around the city. If this is the case then the new cable car rubbish delivery service will be used. Unless the cable has been stolen by someone with an orish accent and a transit van in which case we're stuffed. Merry Christmas!

Another desperate attempt by the churches to get bums on pews! However, along with Father Christmas and Rudolph I suppose it's nice for the kids.

Great idea. They could also place those bales of straw outside the shop for the 'clubbers' to pee on at the weekends - it is supposed to be very environmental and would help keep the streets clean.

I wish people who should know better wouldn't feature one interest group and suggest they are selling 'the true meaning' of anything. It is up to each of us to consider if the celebration has any meaning for us. Do those who say we should put the christ back in christmas also thing we should put the Thor back into Thursday, or the Eostre back into Easter? The Christians stole the midwinter festival from the pagans, and now we can steel it from them and celebrate it anyway we like. I would like to see a festival of being kind, bringing some colour and joy into winter. Nothing against Christians enjoying their celebration, but its a minority belief, so please don't tell us it represents the 'true meaning' of Christmas. ! Who says?
