UPDATE 4pm
A MAIN road which was shut for nearly eight hours after a fatal car accident has re-opened.
The A1073 Crowland Road, near Eye Green, was shut after the accident at 7.55am today, in which the driver of a silver Saab was killed after a collision with a Scania lorry.
The road was closed both ways and traffic was diverted along the A47 Eye Road and B1443 Thorney Road.
The road was re-opened just after 3.30pm after wreckage from the crash had been cleared and accident investigators had left the scene.
TWO people were killed on roads near Peterborough within 24 hours in separate accidents.
One man died following the head-on collision on the A605, near Whittlesey, yesterday, and the second fatality happened this morning on the A1073, near Eye Green.
The crash on the A605, close to the Kings Dyke crossing, was at about 4.20pm and left the victim's grey Seat Toledo beyond recognition after it was in collision with a lorry.
Emergency services were at the scene within minutes, and fire crews cut the man free from his car, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the white articulated Volvo lorry – which is believed to have been carrying bricks, a 44-year-old man from Nottinghamshire – escaped uninjured.
The second crash involved two vehicles, and happened at 7.55am today on Crowland Road.
One person was pronounced dead shortly after the incident.
The road was closed both ways and traffic was diverted along the A47 Eye Road and B1443 Thorney Road.
The crash near Whittlesey yesterday resulted in long tailbacks after the A605 was closed for several hours while police investigated the scene and recovery vehicles removed the car.
Wreckage from both vehicles, which was strewn across the busy road, also had to be cleared up, causing long delays to motorists.
Rush-hour traffic heading east on the A605 from Peterborough was diverted via the B1095 towards Pondersbridge, until the road re-opened at about 7.30pm yesterday.
Formal identification of the man is expected to take place later today.
Motorist Ian Hines, who was driving along the stretch of road at the time, said: "I got there about five minutes after it happened, when traffic was starting to back up along the road.
"The next thing I saw were doctors, police, ambulances and the fire brigade driving past to get to the vehicles, so I knew it was a serious accident. I'm sorry to hear the driver has died."
Cambridgeshire police, who are investigating both crashes, have urged witnesses to come forward, and asked for anyone who was near the scene of either crash to call the road policing unit on 0845 456 4564.
