WOMEN are being warned not to walk alone after a spate of violent handbag snatches in the city.
Mobile phones have also been taken as crooks swoop on unsuspecting pedestrians and wrench their property out of their hands.

The robbers are using mopeds and mini-mopeds to carry out the attacks, most of which have happened between 11am and 3pm.

In the latest incident, a yob on a bicycle targeted an elderly couple walking along Mary Armyne Road, in Orton Longueville, on Wednesday, August 6.

The robber tried to snatch the woman's handbag, but she bravely managed to cling on to it, and he rode off empty-handed.

Police are now looking for witnesses who may have seen the youth, who is described as aged 14 or 15 and was wearing a dark blue tracksuit with white piping.

This is the latest in a string of more than eight robberies in the last two weeks across Peterborough.

July 28 – handbag snatch by cyclist in Pittneys, Paston.

July 29 – handbag snatch in Saville Road, Westwood.

July 30 – handbag snatch in Weatherthorn, Orton Longueville.

July 30 – attempted handbag snatch in The Village, Orton Longueville.

August 2 – attempted handbag snatch in Larch Grove, Dogsthorpe.

August 3 – Mobile phone snatch in Bretton Way, Bretton.

August 3
– Mobile phone snatch in Lincoln Road.

Today, police urged residents across the city to be vigilant and if possible not to walk on their own, and to choose a busier route with more people around.

Inspector Matt Snow said: "If you use routes regularly where there have been attacks, keep any valuables out of view if possible, put your handbag over your body so it's a lot harder to grab, or don't even take them out.

"In Orton, we have stepped up our cycle patrols, making them more visible, and we have been targeting suspects we believe may have had involvement."

Police have also issued a new description of the man they want in connection with a series of attacks in Orton, one of which put a victim in hospital for two days.

The woman was attacked at 10am on August 3 as she was walking past the Gloucester Centre, in Morpeth Close, Orton Longueville.

The youth on a moped grabbed her handbag from her shoulder and as she tried desperately to hold on to the strap, he viciously knocked her over and dragged her along the ground for several seconds.

The man is described as having olive skin and wearing a dark coloured hoodie.

In another incident, he wore a helmet and leathers.

The moped has been described as being either mini or very small and loud. no colour has been mentioned.

Police in Orton have linked three of the incidents in their area, and have charged one man with theft.

A higher presence,

It is a sad, sad day when police warn women not to walk alone in city streets - even in broad daylight.
Perhaps if they were more proactive, and patrolled regularly all the time (rather than just after crimes have been committed) then thugs like the so-called Ride-by Robber would think twice before carrying out such cowardly attacks. Let's hope he gets what he deserves - and I don't mean a slap on the wrist from the courts.

Well said it's time the police stopped drinking tea and targetted these areas and scum and started doing their job. Enough is enough. We pay tax so the streets should be safe.

A good start would be to stop the Police from sitting around in head teachers offices drinking tea.
Another good start is to open the Police Station 24/7 My wife had to stand out side Longthorpe Police Station at 11pm at night to report a incident by phone where a brick was thrown through the windscreen of our car. She said she could see the Police walking around the station but not one came to ask why she was outside on the phone reporting the incedent. Needless to say we never had a visit, she was told the incident had ben reported.
Another good start is to cut down on paper work and get the Police to actualy walk the streets instead of driving through them.

I may take to walking around on my own - if he picked on me he certainly wouldn't be doing at again to anyone else! Bring it on I say.

Hahahaha from the national shame of servicemen being ordered not to wear their uniforms in town we have the police publicly warning 'women, dont walk alone' during the day!
You couldnt make this up.
Have Pride in Peterborough. Why?

Well said Claire 40 - each male from 12 upwards has a piece of valuable equipment attached to his body. He would not appreciate his equipment being ruined by a good kicking from a female bagsnatching victim.
Time to teach these yobs a lesson,It is obvious that
they are unafraid of the law. DIY is the answer.

I've already seen an increased Police presence near me (and no, I don't live opposite Thorpe Wood...) with patrols on food and on cycle.

Police in Peterborough are as good as useless! I am sorry but when I have needed to talk to someone face to face they rarely respond to an 0845 call made to them. When I last saw a couple of PSCO's I told them to their faces that I would deal with the problem next time and they had the NERVE cautioned me!!!!!!
Well if the police aren't gonna deal with problems like this is it any wonder vigilantes are taking to the streets?

Ladies, like me.......carry something heavy in your handbag and don't be frightened to take a swing if this person comes near you trying to get your bag. Just remember that your "ELBOW" is the strongest point of your body and go for the eyes where possible or genitals as a last resort.

The situation out there will not improve until the powers that be realise that any form of society demands rules to be obeyed and discipline to be rigidly enforced.
If they cannot obey the rules of society then they have no right to benefit from it.
The public should be allowed to smash the scum up any way they can and not have to answer for their actions. Try it . I guarantee it will slow them down.

Sadly, all they will get is a caution and politely asked if they would mind not doing it in futue
For God`s sake you people out there , Wake up before it`s too late!
