THERE was anger across Peterborough this morning after Post Office bosses announced three branches in the city were being earmarked for closure.
A seven-week consultation began today on cost-cutting plans to shut post offices in Peterborough along with 23 others across Cambridgeshire.

Peterborough's proposed closures:

  • Oundle Road, Woodston,

  • Lincoln Road, New England

  • Mayors Walk, West Town.

Other post offices also under threat of closure across Cambridgeshire:

  • Harecroft Road, Wisbech

  • St Peter's Road, March

  • Great Stukeley

  • Great Gidding

  • Station Road, Holme

  • High Street, Ramsey St Mary's

  • High Street, Benwick

Post Office bosses claim their closure proposals will leave "99 per cent" of customers still within a mile of their nearest branch, but the move has been condemned by the area's MPs.

And the sub-postmaster of one of the threatened branches has broken his silence to speak out on his fears for the future.

Rajesh Sanpat, who runs the post office in Oundle Road, Woodston, said: "I have known about this since May but I have been legally gagged until it was made public. I'm obviously not happy about it.

"The news came as a bit of a blow and I can't understand why we have been chosen. My post office is a successful business and we are a very busy office.

"I have three ladies working for me and this means their jobs are under threat.

"I wouldn't like to guess what impact it will have on the community but it is not going to be good."

The proposed measures are part of nationwide plans to shut 2,500 branches in a bid to stem losses within the post office network of millions of pounds every week.

A public consultation on the plans has opened today, giving people until August 26 to have their say on the branches earmarked for closure.

SHOULD the Post Office be closing local branches in spite of the services they provide for often disadvantaged members of the community?

Conservative MPs Shailesh Vara and Stewart Jackson both condemned the proposals and urged people to put pressure on Post Office bosses to change their minds.

Mr Vara, who represents North West Cambridgeshire, said: "I am extremely disappointed these branches have been targeted for closure by the Post Office. Each and every one of them plays a vital role providing services to their communities and each and every one will be missed by residents if they close."

Mr Jackson said the closures would be a "crushing blow" for people in his Peterborough constituency.

He said: "I call on the Government to halt these entirely unnecessary closures.

"It is the most disadvantaged in society - like the elderly and disabled - who rely on the post office the most, and ministers must look for sustainable ways to keep our Post Office network open for business."

Post Office officials say it was a "difficult decision" to earmark 26 branches in Peterborough and Cambridgeshire for closure.

But they insist the vast majority of customers will still have good access to their nearest post office facility even if the closures go ahead.

The Woodston Post Office is one of the better ones in the city with a large car park next door and friendly staff!

Did the Post Office make this decision by picking names out of a hat or something?

I agree - the Woodston post office is inside a supermarket. It is frequented by many of the elderly resident who live nearby and who cannot walk into Peterborough City centre. There is no sense in this proposed closure.

If the Post office can no longer provide a service that the residents of this country require, then why does it recieve support from the state. I say privatise.

How have they measured that 99% of customers will be within 1 miles of their nearest branch ? - As the crow flies ? - I don't buy this at all - I cannot see how a Post Office within another establishment can be considered a cost saving measure.

I can not believe that Woodston post office will close, its always busy and the staff are very friendly, I agree with the previous comment regarding the parking its very good, where as Fletton High street PO has awful parking. The boses that be have no idea and I have no idea how they come to this decision.

what a bad and sad decision to close the woodston p/o! very well run and friendly place with very helpful staff! a p/o plays a great part in the community esp for the eldery........ i believe the people that make these decisions dont understand day to day life and needs! every community needs a p/o and one that makes money in a great location its madness to even think about closure! i hope it stays and will support it staying open!

What makes you think it is making money!! If they were they would remain open. Crozier is closing down loss making business' to square the royal mail books, oh and cover his bonus...

We can do without a "greasy spoon". We can't do without a local post office. This is an excellent branch in Mayors Walk, the staff are great but will now be looking for other employment. Not a nice prospect in this economic climate. Good luck to all of you!

It's the people living in rural communities I feel sorry for, especially the elderly and infirm who have no access to public transport in order to reach supposedly accessible Post Offices. How are they going to manage? This Government has no idea of the effect the closures will have on local communities - and seemingly couldn't care less. And as for the six weeks "consultation" time, who do they think they are kidding? They made up their mind long ago which Post Offices were going to be closed and no "consultation" is going to make them change it.
