Deepings: Residents on a busy road have been left fuming after a pile of dirty nappies, household waste and sludge was left in the middle of the road by binmen.
The stinking rubbish was left on Spalding Road, in Deeping St James, near Market Deeping, at 9.30am yesterday, when the bin lorry suffered a mechanical problem, causing the rubbish to spew out of the back.

Along with the obvious health hazard left outside their front doors, residents said they were concerned that motorists could lose control of their cars.

Karen Clare (38), who lives in the house next to where the lorry was parked, said: "The lorry just dumped the rubbish on the road and the men left it there.

"The rubbish has been blown and moved down the road. I don't want it near my house."

To prevent cars from skidding off the road, Mrs Clare parked her car in front of the spillage with the hazard lights on.

She said: "In the morning, this is a very busy road, and children walk along it to and from school.

"We saw a couple of cars swerving to avoid the mess, and were worried that someone would lose control of their car and crash."

Just over an hour after the spill, a second bin lorry finished the round, and shortly afterwards the mess was cleared up.

A spokesman for South Kesteven District Council apologised for the incident, and said: "The bin lorry had a mechanical fault, which meant that rather than taking the waste into the lorry, it was throwing it out.

"The bin men cleared up what they could, but because of the weather conditions, they thought it best to report the problem back to the office staff, who then arranged for a street cleaner to clear up the road. This happened as quickly as possible after the call, at 10.40am.

"The bin lorry has been repaired."

A bit of common sense would tell me that if it's causing a hazard in the road, or that it stinks, put some gloves on and do the street a favour and put it in your bin. Parking a car in front of it with hazards flashing, just makes a bigger hazard. Unless these were giant sized nappies!!!!

I hate this "Oh it's not my job, but I'll keep complaining about it until someone else deals with it" attitude. Grrrrr

If the lady in question had put it in her bin, she would then have been stuck with it stinking away for another two weeks before SKDC came back to collect it. How would you like to have that.

Hang on a minute, just because the bin men left the mess outside her house, why should she have to clean up their mess? Removing rubbish is part of what we all pay our council tax for.

Good on you Karen for raising it to the attention of your council.

Doesn't really seem newsworthy to me.

It looks like the binmen tried all they could to sort it out and called a street sweeper to sort it out as soon as possible.

I used to dump the contents of a bin wagon regularly in the road in the days when hot cinders where in dust bins and the back end court fire.
The difference here is that the waste was left by the council.
In my day a simple phone call to the depot was enough to send out a lorry and crew to clear the mess up and disinfect the road.
We did not have the luxury of Mobiles either we either used a phone box or asked some one if we could use there's.

Why don't the council set on a posse to go round fitting up pensioners for the mess and fining them.
Wouldn't put it past them!

I think you most of you missed the point, red tape would say that if the bin men drop rubbish it would be left for another department to clean it up wasting more tax payers cash. The lazy beggers who collect rubbish should carry the dust pan and brush or maybe be a little less care free .... I have seen it with my very eyes ....shame on the bin men!!!
