MOTORBIKE racing fans still reeling from the tragic death of rising star Craig Jones will be able to bid a final farewell to their hero this weekend.
The 23-year-old, from Warmington, near Oundle, was killed in a horrific crash at Brands Hatch in the World Supersport championship on August 3.
Tomorrow is the next round of the contest at Donington Park, and his Parkalgar Honda team and family are planning a poignant tribute.
Speaking exclusively to The Evening Telegraph, his father Steve (47), from Northwich, Cheshire, revealed the last few weeks had been up and down but the support from friends, family and well-wishers had helped get them through.
He said the tribute, from his best friend – who was at his hospital bedside as he slipped away – would be a fitting way for fans to say goodbye.
He said: "There will be a minute's silence, followed by a tribute lap of applause for Craig at Donington in the next round of the championship.
"Craig's closest friend in racing, Tommy Hill, will go round on Craig's bike. It will also be a chance for fans to say farewell.
"Then the Parkalgar Honda will field only Miguel Praia in the race, which would have been his team-mate's second home event."
Team manager Simon Buckmaster said: "It is not going to be easy this weekend, but Miguel and the team will concentrate on doing the best job that they can and achieving the best result possible.
"The tribute to Craig we feel is fitting for a great, well-loved and respected rider.
"It's also an opportunity for the World Superbike paddock and the race fans to say goodbye to Craig."
He added: "It is a big loss to the team but we will be putting 100 per cent effort behind Miguel this weekend and I know that our professionalism as a team will move us forward as Craig would have wanted."
It was recently announced that his team was set to pay Craig the ultimate accolade – by naming the most difficult corner on its new circuit after him.
It will also be setting up a memorial to him at the circuit so that visitors can pay their respects.
The full unveiling will take place with Craig's family at the final round of World Superbikes in November.
Hundreds paid their respects to the rider at an emotionally-charged funeral service in Fotheringhay, near Oundle, last month.
n The World Supersport race takes place on Sunday, September 7 at 1.20pm, and will be shown live on British Eurosport, or it can be watched online at www.worldsbk.com
