Pupils are sew clever with quilt designs

CHILDREN have taken a trip back in time to inspire their quilt design.
Pupils at Oundle’s Laxton Junior School, have entered the prestige Festival of Quilts, one of the largest quilting events in Europe.
This year’s theme is Essential Elements and rather than “walking like Egyptians” the pupils have been sewing like Egyptians.
The 29 Year 5 pupils, with guidance from Helen Shair, have created an Egyptian-style quilt, focusing on the cultural beliefs in Ancient Egypt, such as religion and the afterlife, and using colours and decorations which mirror the richness of that era.
Mrs Shair, who runs the after-school club Fabric Fun, said: “I have attended the competition for the last three years. The boys and girls are all very proud and excited about the quilt being entered into the competition.”
The festival, which is being held at the NEC in Birmingham this August is not to be missed.
More than 1,300 quilts are expected to be entered and, as well as the competition, there will be an array of masterclasses, workshops and lectures for all abilities.
