Of course passenger numbers will be down, there are fewer shops in Peterborough and locals are choosing to shop outside of the city ! Add that to the fact we are still in a recession and people are being careful with their spending due to uncertain job futures - it's not going to get any better !

The numbers are down- could this be because the barriers (in Cathedral Square) are up?

I think the Cathedral Square barriers have mostly been removed for now.

Of course they are down. You have to drive out of town to get on a cold bus to come back into a cold town to carry heavy shopping around and struggle back on to another cold bus to go back out of town to get your car to come back in towards town.

Plus the range of shops is rubbish and there is the ongoing work and people don't have money to spend (we have just had a couple of people go) and you won't necessarily get what you want.

Compare that to shopping online where you stay warm and dry, get exactly what you want and it is cheaper than in town even with delivery to your door.

No contest.

@BigTed (#4) I may be wrong but I don't think the Park and Ride is really aimed at people living within the city limits because like you've said, you need to drive out of town to come back in on transport that's less convenient.

For visitors to the city though, the service should be more attractive. You can park quickly and for free and the bus takes you straight into the heart of Peterborough.

If numbers are down, can we assume fewer people are visiting Peterborough? For those that are visiting, are they aware of the Park and Ride and what it offers them?

@BigTed (#4) In addition, I agree with you that the range of shops and the convenience of online shopping really doesn't sell Peterborough as a retail destination, at least not to me.

I never struggle to shop in Peterborough but feel I get a better experience elsewhere.

It's a shame really because it is a good service other cities run it successfully but as people have already stated unemployment, other shopper friendly places, internet and lack of choice is the problem in Peterborough.

if no-one uses it, the service will be pulled after this year; that'll save a fair bit of money for the council, so clearly it will be reported as a failure

Recession? People have less to spend? When i was in Peterborough the other afternoon it was packed with people carrying shopping and Queensgate was very busy - or maybe it was all the people that are on benefits spending their cash!
