Great Gidding residents rallying round a local post office threatened with closure found a novel way to highlight the importance of the service.
Campaigners in Great Gidding sent a runner, cyclist, horse rider and a temporarily disabled athlete on the 10-mile trek to the nearest branch in Sawtry to show how the route could be managed by only the most fittest people.
A spokesman for the Great Gidding Action Group said: "The journey to Sawtry is impossible on foot for all but the fittest.
"There are no footpaths on most of the route. If we use our cars, how does that sit with the fact that we're constantly being urged to reduce our carbon footprint?
"And, we have an increasing number of Gidding residents of pensionable age, some of them unable to make the journey easily, even in a car."
Great Gidding Post Office has been placed on the list of branches in the region set to be closed – but residents living in the village have not given up on saving their branch.
The Great Gidding Action Group will be
presenting its case to save Gidding's post office to Post Office Limited at a meeting this Thursday.
