New plans for £480m North Westgate transformation

THE people behind the redevelopment of the North Westgate area have unveiled new plans following months of public consultation.
Instead of moving the bus station as previously proposed, a "cathedral like" structure will instead tower over a revamped interchange on its current site containing shops and a new car park.

Under the reworked proposals, which developers insist could still become reality by 2013:

The Clare, Royce, and Cavell multi-storey car parks will be demolished as before, but the Perkins multi-storey will be retained and refurbished.

Car parking will not be concentrated in two new multi-storeys with a combined capacity of 3,300 spaces, but more widely spread over four car parks of 392, 600, and 1,300 plus the bus station car park, giving 2,892 spaces.

A multiplex cinema of around 10 screens is now on the edge of the development at Bourges Boulevard, so that it becomes more visible.

But there is no space in the rejigged plans for The Brewery Tap, which still faces the wrecking ball, despite the objections of protesters who mounted a "Don't Scrap The Tap" campaign.

Punky Si,

I'd be very suprised to hear that people actually wanted a "cathedral like" structure as opposed to the Brewery Tap. I really wish that PCC and Oppurtunity Peterborough actually listened to the residents of our city and designed something that would truly regenerate the place.

In 20 years when people are disinterested with the shops on offer what's going to happen? yet more shops put up in their place? I've said all along other things need to be introduced, such as a museum which can excite and educate the kids who'll end up hanging outside shops they have no cash or inclination to go in.

Oh I dunno Punky Si, I'm pretty sure when I spoke to OP in Queensgate that I overheard someone asking for another cathedral. And an ice skating rink.

Yet another example of how the personal considerations of the planners and builders, with their apparent cosy "you-scratch-my-back and I'll-scratch-yours" relationship, overrides the wishes of the local population. Planners must remember that they are elected councillors and that the electorate can un-elect them. Builders have to build to get their profit, and they will ride rough-shod over anybody. They would demolish Westminster Abbey if they had a chance to make a killing. They call themselves "developers" to try to pull the wool over our eyes that they are actually improving our environment, when the only thing they are developing is their bank accounts. It's criminal vanadalism to demolish "The Brewery Tap". What for? To line people's pockets.

I am pretty tired of hearing all the criticism and negative comments... I am in no way connnected to the developers or council (but I am sure I will still be slated for being so)... Peterborough needs this development and I really struggle to understand the position of the 'naysayers' who appear to want to keep us trapped in the 1970's! We need to embrace change and influence where we can... unless of course people posting to this site have a spare £400M to invest in their own development ideas that can retain the as well then I suggest we support these plans! Change can be good...dont fear it!

Any development is going to be with us for 20 years, so it needs to be good. People being able to get in and out of the centre by cycle and by foot needs to be the priority. People need to be able to get into the centre by bus without it being dangerous or unshelterd from the weather. Few doubt Peterborough needs a facelift, but the practical things need to be considered and not just the style.
I personally thing the level of shops is already big enough to cover the population growth and no extra ones are needed.

Lets face it most of the people involved in this project will have more brown envelopes of cash than they can hide without being found out. The council and OP will never listen as they want to do it their way.

When it's built and not being used then they will blame Joe Public and claim they gave them what they asked for.

Has anybody else noticed the cut in the number of available car park spaces? 500 less than was in the original plan, with no sign of the sorely needed permanent park and ride system which we have been told will come - when?? Maybe the idea is to encourage people to catch the service buses, but they do not always run at convenient times or in convenient places. Park and ride has to be the eventual answer - and it will help to keep some of the carbon emissions out of the city centre as well. We are supposed to be aiming to be the UK Environment Capital, after all!

With all the roads works that are going to be going on yet AGAIN AND AGAIN.

Out of town shopping looks the best bet.

Delete all you want - it is the crime capital. Criminals in Public Office, no police, poor sentencing.

Where's Captainsawdust and his petition when you need him?
