AS work on the long-awaited £80 million Peterborough to Spalding bypass reaches a crucial stage, there are more weeks of misery ahead for motorists.
But today there was plea to people affected by the roadworks, while a new roundabout linking the A1073 Bypass to the A47 is created and brought into use, for their patience as long-term gain will follow the short-term pain.
Work on the 13-mile long route is actually progressing ahead of schedule, and the new road alignment is now ready to be tied in with the existing carriageway on the A47 near Eye.
However, this complex work requires the closure of the junction at Welland Road, Dogsthorpe, Peterborough, for the safety of road users and the workforce – starting on Monday, July 20
For four weeks, the stretch of road between the A47 and Furze Ride will be closed. Further work phases on the A47 eastbound carriageway will also be started at the same time.

Meanwhile, the nearby Newborough Road junction on the A47 also needs to be closed from July 20 for approximately 12 weeks to allow the next phase of construction of the eastbound carriageway to begin – from the A15 Paston Parkway junction to the newly created A47 roundabout.
Head of technical services at Lincolnshire County Council Elaine Turner said: "We hope people using the road and living in the area will be understanding during an unavoidably disruptive phase of these vital works.
"The long-term gain beyond this will be to significantly improve road safety and reduce congestion for everyone.
"It took many years of hard work to secure funding, and we are pleased the Government recognised the importance of this scheme, which is now progressing ahead of schedule.
"The main aim of carrying out these works with overlapping timescales is to minimise the short-term disturbance."
The diversion route for the Welland Road junction will be signed as A47, Fulbridge Road, St Paul's Road, Welland Road and vice-versa.
For the Newborough Road works, the signed alternative route will be via the A47-A15 Paston Parkway, Werrington Bridge Road, B1443 Thorney Road and Guntons Road, leading to Newborough Road.
An emergency bus timetable will be in operation during both the Welland Road and Newborough Road closures.
The A1073 Bypass scheme has been jointly developed by Lincolnshire County Council and Peterborough City Council and will run parallel to the existing A1073, and also includes junction improvements, provision for non-motorised users, traffic-calming along the existing A1073 and environmental mitigation works.
Completion is anticipated in summer 2010.
