Detectives swooped on an Eastfield street after getting calls that a body had been discovered in a house.
Several police cars and an ambulance arrived on the scene, in Park Lane, Eastfield, yesterday morning (July 22), after a worried neighbour alerted them.

Shocked residents looked on as officers filed into the neat, semi-detached property.

The body of an elderly man in his 80s was found in one of the rooms.

A woman, believed to be his wife, was taken from the house by ambulance to Peterborough District Hospital.

At about 11.30am, two hours after the first call, two police officers and a car stood guard outside the house, while detectives examined the interior.

Jane Fletcher (66), who lives in the street, said: "He was 80 and Polish.

"His wife was English and a had a stroke a while back.

"They had been living there for ages.

"He was a nice bloke and wouldn't say boo to a goose. They kept themselves to themselves.

"We don't know what's happened.

"I've lived here for 24 years and nothing like this has happened here before."

She added: "They were a nice couple. I have nothing bad to say about them."

Nicola King (28), whose mum lives in the street, said: "My mum got a knock on the door from police, who asked if she had heard any screaming.

"It's terrible.

"You don't expect this to happen where you live."

The death was originally being treated as unexplained.

However, following investigations, a police spokesman confirmed the incident was not being seen as suspicious, and a file had been passed to the coroner.
