A MURDER hunt was launched today after a man died after being beaten and kicked in an attack and then taken to hospital by an unknown person several hours later.
Mystery surrounds the circumstances of the attack on the 25-year-old man on The Embankment, in Peterborough, on Saturday night.

Yesterday, police cordoned off a section of path close to the Key Theatre. But, they are faced with the riddle of how the man, who is believed to have been attacked between 7pm and 9pm, then came to be found dead several hours later, some distance away at Peterborough District Hospital, in the early hours of Sunday.

Today, neither police nor hospital authorities could confirm if the man had been treated at the casualty unit prior to his death, or where he was found within the hospital precincts.

It is thought the man was punched and kicked and left for dead by his attackers. Whether they then panicked and took him to hospital later, or whether a mystery good Samaritan tried to save his life is still not clear.

Today, detectives investigating the incident are trying to piece together the man's movements in the moments leading up to the assault on Saturday evening.

Police want to speak to whoever took the victim to hospital to find out whether they have any information regarding the assault.

The area of The Embankment which was cordoned off yesterday will remain closed today while investigations continue.

Forensic officers have also been scouring part of The Embankment as they search for clues and evidence which will make it clearer how the man died, and how many people could have been involved in the assault.

No one seems clear on what happened after the victim arrived at the hospital.

A post-mortem examination carried out at the hospital yesterday revealed the man died as a result of being assaulted.

However, police are still not in a position to name the man, as formal identification has not yet taken place.

DCI Ian Tandy, who is investigating the incident, said: "We are appealing to any witnesses who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area of The Embankment on Saturday night between the hours of 7pm and 9pm."

n If you have any information on the incident, call police on 0845 456 4564 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

I agree Jimbo. I am sure the Police are putting timelines together. Whoever did this deserves 20 years plus, it also shows the lack of respect and fear that they think they can get away with doing this in a public area.

The Embankment area is frequented daily by several - sometimes large - groups of drinkers and drug users. Arguments break out very often and I have seen several fights when I've been walking along there. That's where I'd start looking.

All this is in a so-called alcohol free zone. And maybe if we ever saw the Council and the Police enforcing the anti drink and anti social laws down there, this may not have happened.
