THE MP for North West Cambridgeshire was invited to speak at the Commonwealth Foundation's conference on civil society.
Shailesh Vara spoke alongside the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Rt Hon Kamalesh Sharma, and speaker of the Ugandan Parliament, Rt Hon Edward Ssekandi MP.

The Commonwealth Foundation and Commonwealth Secretariat are conducting a Civil Society Consultation to improve relations between organisations such as charities and voluntary groups and parliaments throughout the Commonwealth.

Mr Vara spoke of the situation in the UK and of his experience in dealing with voluntary sector organisations as an MP.

Afterwards he said: “As an MP, I am well aware of the good work conducted by so many voluntary groups and civil society organisations. An MP’s relationship with such groups is vital.

“The session was very useful, including a lively question and answer session after the speeches were over.”
