Bright, breezy and with the flair of a Continental piazza – this is how Peterborough city centre could look within two years.
The artist's impression and details of what will replace the '60s Post Office building were unveiled by regeneration company Opportunity Peterborough at a meeting yesterday (May 27).

Work will begin by December and the plans can be seen in Queensgate on Friday, May 30th.

What do you think of the redevelopment plans?

-------------------------------------

The images show the modern Corn Exchange building, which squats next to the 15th century St John the Baptist church, flattened to make way for the attractive public square as a new focal point for the city centre.

The cafe, intended to be a striking building in its own right, sits on the square and trees have been planted to soften the grim exterior of Queensgate.

People lounge on new seating put in place to encourage them to stop and linger.

And an open "vista" has been created, with the new plaza looking out towards Cross Street and along it to Priestgate.

Leader of the council Cllr John Peach said a planning application to demolish the Corn Exchange should be submitted over the next two weeks. He added: "Once we get that building knocked down, we can have a lovely public square that will really enhance the city centre.

"If we take down some of the railings around the church, light up the Guildhall at night and put down some high-quality paving stones and public furniture, it will really brighten the area up."

A key role in the makeover is given to Cathedral Square, which is seen as having the potential to become a

"large flexible space right in the heart of the city".

As The ET reported earlier this year, the proposals also include the installation of a water feature, such as ground level jets which gush upwards.

Director of strategic growth for Opportunity Peterborough Steve Bowyer said preliminary work on Cathedral Square could begin before Christmas with plans to demolish the Corn Exchange in the autumn of next year.

However, Cllr Peach admitted there was the issue of what to do with its current tenants including the post office.

He said: "Certainly from the council's point of view, we want to retain the branch in the city centre, but the Post Office seems reluctant to talk to us at the moment."

The proposals for St John's Square and Cathedral Square are contained in a document called the Public Realm Strategy.

It will be available for inspection at an Opportunity Peterborough stand in the Queensgate shopping centre on Friday, where members of the team will be available to answer questions.

It can also be obtained online at www.opportunitypeterborough.co.uk, or by phoning 01733 317417.

The center may look like a continental square with one exeption. Continental Squares are spotlessly clean Peterborough's will be a stink hole full of dossers vomit, beggars drunks and prostitutes.
If they put in fountains these will be public toilets for all of the above mentioned.

Will there really be a cafe or will we just get another stinking chip van?

"Continental piazza".. but this is Peterborough, not somewhere in the South of France. Silk purses and sows ears spring to mind here. Remember that the idea of Rivergate was sold as being like a "little Venice"... great job they did of that eh.

Do the public really want/need another place to sit outside and drink coffee? Is that REALLY the best OP could come up with - another retail/food outlet and a load of chairs? We already have the area outside of Limon and Delifrance which is more than enough surely?

And why get rid of the existing seating on the other side of the Guildhall when it's more than satisfactory? Fountains in the ground are such a tacky idea when we only have a handful of weeks each year to really enjoy it. If a water feature is that high on the wish list then fit a proper fountain (remember that Cathedral Square DID have a fountain once upon a time and so did Queensgate, all of which have been relocated/removed - maybe the developers could learn something here?).

Knock down the Corn Exchange, tidy up the area with subtle seating and a vandal-proof water feature and stop getting delusions of grandeur.

Knock down the Corn Exchange and put up a simple but elegant covered market place to host parts of the farmer's and continental markets rather than shoe-horning them into Bridge Street when some tacky ice-rink dominates the town centre.

All this talk of piazzas, plazas and vistas. Anyone would think this was a lovely medieval Italian town, annointed with splendid renaissance architecture. Sienna this is not. The reality is that this is a grim, dreary post-industrial town of no significance, and creating a square will give it even more of a windswept, litter-strewn feel. It will also be an enormous waste of space, at the post office's expense - which is something I'm sure people would rather have.

HC, that would be a really good idea but I think the area would be a bit too small for a decent range of market stalls. Maybe the existing Peterborough Market could be revamped in a similar way though? Introduce more food stalls, deli's, etc.

this council kills me.....

as an extremely keen cyclist ive ridden all over this town & the surrounding areas & one thing ALWAYS comes to mind....this whole "pride in peterborough" crap...

this town is a dump, just walk outside of the centre & its litter everywhere....ferry meadows (place i love) is no better, just a dumping ground on the old A47 (car park now) all sorts of detritis around the edge of the lakes... cycle along the dedicated cycle ways & the hedgerows are full of rubbish from one end of this town to the other.....& now some one has a brainwave to demolish a beautiful original part of this city for what..... pavement chic!!!??? give me a break please!!

where are the customers going to come from to buy these extremely over priced items??? & when they go out of business they will be another empty unit ready for the Xmas decorations people OR another £1 shop!!!

what this council should do is put finance in to youth projects OR put it to better use & really develop th embankment to make that a place to enjoy...

one last thing......surely this building is protected by English Heritage or someone.... OR will that be over looked for MONEY & some back hander to the pigs with their noses in the trough at the town hall...
