A WELL-KNOWN homeless woman has died just days after being involved in a road accident in Peterborough.
Pedestrian Laura Manton (25) died at Peterborough District Hospital on Monday after being seriously injured in a collision with a car five days earlier.

The accident happened in Lincoln Road, close to its junction with Church Walk, at about 7pm, on October 2.

The 78-year-old male driver, who was in a blue Renault Clio, was not injured.

Now police have issued an urgent appeal for witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Nigel Jennings said: "The area was busy at the time, and I would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident.

"Any information, no matter how small, could prove invaluable in determining what happened."

Ms Manton was a well known figure in the city, often found sleeping rough in a bus shelter at The Triangle, in New England.

She was the former girlfriend of homeless Thomas Smythe, who died in January last year at the age 46.

Months before his tragic death, he had told The Evening Telegraph of the couple's fight for survival as they struggled to cope with freezing cold and pouring rain, living in a metal storage shed.

In a heart-breaking tale, he told the ET that the couple were not accepted into any shelters or council schemes as they were both alcoholics who drank around the clock.

it was said that she was a particularly unsavoury character, extremely abusive & violent in manner to all & sundry....

I live in an area that this person frequented on a daily basis & saw nothing but a vile, aggressive, drunken, abusive, threatening woman. Only polite when begging & very quick to turn when refused ANY money....

I have no doubt this will be deleted BUT remember I/WE lived with it daily, so i think we have a right to a view....

on a human level it is extremely sad that a person has died. but i say spare a thought also for the 78yr old man who has had to come to terms with the accident too.

no winners here...

people are entitled to opinions Vita. You may have found her okay, others may not and you shouldn't crucify people because they differ in opinion to yourself. As for the person who deleted the quite reasonable initial post, your intolerance should shame you !

I grew up with Laura, and we were friends, that poor girl had an awfull upbringing and wasn't treated properly throughout her whole life, she tried her hardest, but narrow minded people kept shooting her down, so she turned to alcohol to numb the pain in her life, which we have all done at some point, that does not mean she is a bad person, she's a person who needed help but people looked at her like she was something on their shoe, and they were too quick to judge what they saw, not what inside, yes she was loud and often abusive, due to her problems with alcohol, but that does not mean she should be slated now she's no longer here, you should show some respect to people who are less fortunate than yourselves, because it's not always their fault. rest in peace sweetie, be no longer in pain xxx
