ACTOR Warwick Davis has been revealed as the celebrity who will switch on Peterborough's Christmas lights in November.
The Yaxley film star – who played Professor Filius Flitwick in the Harry Potter movies – will switch on the festive display on November 19 at 7pm.

Due to the redevelopment works at Cathedral Square, the switch-on will move from its usual location to a new home on Bridge Street.

The stage will be placed outside the town hall, where there will be family entertainment from 5pm, with local acts taking the stage to entertain crowds up until switch-on time.

A Christmas food and craft market will be held along Bridge Street and Long Causeway from November 18 to 22, to coincide with the switch on.

There will also be competitions, one-night-only discounts a Santa's grotto and entertainment at Westgate Department Store on Park Road, which is sponsoring the switch-on event.

Peterborough City Council's cabinet member for regional and business engagement councillor Gavin Elsey said: "We gave assurances earlier in the year that the work to develop Cathedral Square would not affect our Christmas celebrations and we have remained true to our word. I am looking forward to welcoming lots of people to the city to see the lights and enjoy the entertainment."

@#1 - Surely it's better to have somebody who has knowledge of, and cares about, Peterborough turn on the lights, rather than some non-entity from Eastenders or Hollyoaks who's here for the cash?? Also, Warwick is fairly well known and a nice chap!

They should have asked George Boyd. This city has a football team brimming with top quality star players and it needs to embrace them.

Great choice - a local celebrity who actually does a lot in the community that goes unrecognised

It's about time our local celebrity was given the job! he can do it every year as far as I'm concerned! support everything and everyone local!

Seems a good choice to me - shame about some of the comments - deserved to be removed.
Altho' occurs to me that if George Boyd had been asked we could have all joined in a chorus of 'Walking in a Boydy Wonderland' !
