COMMUTERS in Peterborough faced train chaos last night after severe flooding in Scotland disrupted rail services to and from the north along the East Coast Main line.
Services between north-east England and Scotland were scrapped for a time after severe rainfall between Berwick and Edinburgh.
And although services south of Newcastle, including Peterborough, were running, they were subject to hour-long delays.
It left frustrated travellers making their way home stuck at Peterborough station for up to an hour.
National Express was trying to arrange road transport for passengers stuck at Newcastle, but was unable to give an estimate of how many people were affected.
A spokesman said: “There is flooding at several locations including Penmanshiel, Innerwick and Torness, all between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Dunbar. Additionally, there is flooding in Edinburgh between Waverley and Haymarket stations in the city centre.
“We don’t expect a normal service to resume until at least later this morning, and passengers planning to travel north of Newcastle should postpone their journeys.”
Tickets to and from Scotland not used on Thursday would still be honoured on Friday, said a company spokesman.
It is accepting tickets bought for CrossCountry services, which also cross the border on the line.
Tickets from both companies are also being accepted on Virgin Trains services between London Euston and Glasgow Central, via the north-west coast.
nPassengers should check with National Rail Enquiries on 08457 48 49 50 before travelling and National Express will run a revised timetable on www.nationalrail.co.uk
