TEENAGERS training for employment will visit Wisbech Fire Station today, to find out more about how to stay safe on the roads and in the home, and the dangers of arson.
A total of 15 students, aged 16 to 19, will attend the safety day.

They are currently on an Entry to Employment training programme at Nacro in Wisbech, designed to improve their chances in the jobs market and give them work placement experience.

In the morning, firefighters will talk about their experiences of cutting casualties out of vehicles following road accidents.

The teenagers will also be shown a DVD about road safety and will watch the firefighters stage a road traffic accident demonstration in the drill yard.

The afternoon’s activities will focus around safety in the home. Firefighters will explain the importance of cooking safely and correctly extinguishing cigarettes. The group will be encouraged to draw up an escape plan for their home and make sure they have working smoke alarms.

The dangers of arson will also be discussed, and firefighters will explain how just how quickly a fire can spread.

Watch manager at Wisbech fire station Matt Murdoch said: “This is a great opportunity for us to speak to these young people directly in a fun and informal way.

“We hope they will have an enjoyable day, but also take away some very important safety messages.”

Employability skills trainer at Nacro, in Wisbech, Ginny Burgess said: “We are really pleased that the fire service is giving us the opportunity to do this community education programme.”
