NEW roads in the city will be named after popular Peterborough characters.
Peterborough City Council leader John Peach told members of the full council that he was in favour of the idea, but had some reservations.
He also added that Werrington councillor John Fox's motion to immortalise the city's great and good was something the Conservatives had already been doing.
He said: "If he had asked us, we would have told him we had discussed the possibility of naming streets after Peterborough characters. But it can be distressing when the family of the people are still alive and we don't want their name mentioned in public.
"We need to treat these things with a little more sensitivity."
He said that once negotiations with the council's legal department were finalised, the walkway near the Town Bridge will be named Walter's Leap after strongman Walter Cornelius.
Cllr Fox has previously said: "I think the real characters of the city deserve to be recognised for the contribution they have made."
