THE Royal Air Force celebrated being given the freedom of Peterborough more than 20 years ago – and made a strong declaration about its role in British society with a grand ceremony.
Shoppers in the city centre were taken by surprise when three harriers from RAF Wittering, near Peterborough, went on a fly-past over Peterborough Cathedral – with exhilarating speed.

Marching bands also formed a parade down Bridge Street, in central Peterborough, and a General Salute was made as the Harriers flew past.

Mayor of Peterborough, John Horrell and other city councillors turned out to inspect the parade, held yesterday to celebrate the 22nd anniversary of RAF Wittering being given the freedom of the city.

Tony Walsh, a spokesman for RAF Wittering, said the event sent an important message to the public.

He said: "Everyone at RAF Wittering was very proud to be able to do this and everyone feels quite honoured.

"It lets the people of Peterborough see the RAF and know that we are still here and still very much a part of British life.

"It helps us to commemorate the city and ourselves, and allows us to build up a relationship with the public."

RAF Wittering was given the freedom of Peterborough after the Falklands War of 1983.

It was given to them as a record of the remarkable service they had provided since their existence, with their work in the two world wars featuring in particular.

However, after The Falklands proved to be a crowning moment for RAF Wittering, which had a strong role in the conflict, it was enough to get them the prestigious honour.

The air force celebrates its achievement every two years with a display and flypast. A GR3 Harrier Cockpit was also on display in Cathedral Square.

Two officers and 44 personnel took part in yesterday's events, which were held between 12.10pm and 12.45pm.

Cllr Horrell said: "I was delighted to take part in this colourful and significant procession.

"Freedom of the city is one of the highest honours a local authority can bestow on a local air force, which provides them with the right to parade through the city in full military regalia."
