FORMER mayor Marion Todd's decision to remove the photograph of disgraced ex-mayor Mohammed Choudhary from the town hall has sparked a war of words between councillors.
Cllr Todd took the unprecedented step after Mr Choudhary, Peterborough mayor in 1996/97, was jailed for rigging votes in the 2004 Peterborough City Council election.

Her decision to remove the photograph from the mayor's parlour came under fire at the annual council meeting on Monday, when Labour leader Cllr Nazim Khan called the intervention "disrespectful".

Cllr Khan praised Cllr Todd for "great work" during her mayoral term, but said her decision meant that her year in office had ended in "sadness".

He said: "It is disrespectful to the majority of the community to remove the picture of a former mayor. I hope you will re-consider that decision."

Cllr Khan and Mr Choudhary previously served together on the Labour benches.

Following the meeting, Cllr Khan was backed up by his Labour colleague Cllr Zahid Hussain, who said Cllr Todd had no right to remove the photograph from a public area.

Meanwhile, prior to the meeting, Cllr Charles Swift, mayor in 1961/62 and the leader of the Peterborough Independent Forum, said: "If the photograph has been taken down from the mayor's parlour, it is a diabolical liberty.

"I take great exception because no one has the right to take a photograph away – apart from the council."

Cllr Todd said she stood by her decision, which was taken following consultation with, and support from, other councillors.

Explaining her decision last week, Cllr Todd said: "The mayor's parlour was my domain for the mayoral year, and every mayor has the right to decide what is and what isn't displayed in there.

"I believe it is a great honour to be a mayor, and therefore I did not believe it was right to continue to display Mohammed Choudhary's photograph in the mayor's parlour after his recent conviction for election fraud."

Cllr Todd said it was up to Peterborough's new mayor, Cllr Pat Nash, to decide whether the photograph was returned to the mayor's parlour.

A council spokesman said there were no firm rules on the removal of Choudhary's picture.

He said: "We took the view that Cllr Marion Todd, as the mayor at that time ,was able to decide what she wishes to display and not display in the mayor's parlour, and she made the decision that the photograph was to be removed.

"Councillor Pat Nash as the new mayor will have a similar right to choose what she wants to display and not display in the mayor's parlour."

Councillor Todd was absolutely right to remove the photograph and it should never be put back up. It's about time we lost this culture of slapping people's wrists when they commit a criminal offence. Choudhary has brought shame on our city; as he was sentenced to 9 months imprisonment he wouldn't even be eligible to stand as a ward councillor now. I'm seriously beginning to wonder what planet our council are on, it's a shame we didn't have a few more people like Marion Todd representing us as I'm sure the city would be a much nicer place.

Cllr Nazim Khan called the ntervention "disrespectful - no doubt he also supports Gul Nawaz, another cheat who is in a position of power?

Until the corruption is cleaned up nobody can have faith in a council like this.

"The mayor's parlour was my domain for the mayoral year, and every mayor has the right to decide what is and what isn't displayed in there."

End of Argument.

If the objectors wish to have the picture returned then the answer is simple - they should stand for the position of Mayor.

The act of removing the photograph of Choudhary should be applauded and supported throughout Peterborough.

Cllr Khan said: "It is disrespectful to the majority of the community to remove the picture of a former mayor. I hope you will re-consider that decision."

I am sure that it is only felt disrespectful to those of Choudhary's corrupt supporters. It is disrespectful to me, those whom he cheated out of votes and the rest of Peterborough if it is ever allowed to be put back into place.

The Council should not allow Choudhary's picture back up unless it is the one with him holding the board with his prison number on it, showing what a truly dishonest person he is.

Well done Marion Todd for standing up for her principles, if only all the other Cllr's would look to her for inspiration.

There is another blank space in the Mayor's Parlour. That Major, some years ago, appears to have not wanted his picture in that 'rogues' gallery. I wonder if that is true how many more photos will come down?

Cllr Todd was exactly right. Choudhary is an utter disgrace and an embarassment to this city.
It appears she and Cllr Michael Burton - the only Tories who refused to vote in favour of Gul Nawaz becoming deputy mayor - and a handful of non-Tories, are the only councillors with any common sense, integrity and appreciation of what people in this city think.
