A FATHER who was racing to take his children to see their ill mother in hospital while over the drink-drive limit has appeared in court.
Jason Davis (42), of Saxon Way, Bourne, pleaded guilty to one count of speeding and one of drink-driving at Peterborough Magistrates' Court yesterday.
He admitted breaching a suspended sentence, after being caught with a machete – which he had use
d to chop a Christmas tree down – in December last year.
Davis was caught by police officers travelling at 91mph on the A1M near Junction 17 on August 21, while taking his 16-year-old and 10-year-old sons to see their mother in Papworth Hospital.
She had spent the week fighting for her life in a Manchester hospital after complications with a medical condition, and had just been transferred to a regular ward.
It was the oldest son's 16th birthday, and the family were keen that he opened his presents and cards with his mum.
He had also just received his GCSE results, and wanted to celebrate his two A*s, three As and five Bs as a family.
Davis, who said he had needed a drink to relax, had drunk two bottles of wine the night before, and thought the alcohol would have gone from his system.
However, he had 59 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 milliltres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes of alcohol to 100 millilitres of breath.
The case was committed to Lincoln Crown Court for sentencing, and Davis was disqualified from driving until that hearing. A date for sentencing has yet to be finalised.
