THE proportion of people with diabetes in Peterborough is higher than the national average, according to new figures released by the NHS.
Four per cent of city residents over the age of 17 have been diagnosed with diabetes, compared to an average of 3.8 per cent in similar health authority areas throughout the country.

NHS Diabetes, an organisation set up to combat levels of the illness, says obesity is a common cause of diabetes, and between 2003 and 2005, 27 per cent of adults in Peterborough were classified as obese – a figure higher than the national average.

This is another example of where city leaders lack joined-up thinking.

By proposing the scrapping of school meals, the rate of diabetes will only go higher.

Children should be taught the importance of good food, from planting the seeds to serving the produce onto the plate, as others argued a few days ago on these boards. I endorse such comments. We need more allotments in schools to help reverse this sorry trend.

In short, we need locally produced fruit, vegetables and meat for school meals. Not only will this be good for our childrens' health and cut the rate of diabetes, it will also be good for our environment and stimulate the local economy.

A city which aspires to be the UK's Environment Capital should be doing nothing less.

The rate may be above the 'norm' because of better testing. GPs have been quite hot on this in the last couple years (as have they with cholesterol tests - largely due to the drugs companies wanting to push their nasty Statins) but there are still many people unaware that they are ill.

I also agree with the above comment regarding educating children about healthy food. It is now widely belived that eating large amounts of refined carbohydrates (white bread sandwiches in pack-ups etc)is a major contributary factor in the onset of diabetes.
