TRAFFIC in Peterborough city centre was gridlocked yesterday (4 July) after a three car-collision forced the partial closure of the A1.

Tailbacks stretched for miles along the city's key parkways and main streets as motorists faced delays of at least two hours while emergency services attended the scene of the accident.

The drama began at about 12.40pm when a silver Citroen Picasso, a red Ford Galaxy and a red Rover 416 were in collision on the A1, and police closed the northbound carriageway between junction 16 at Norman Cross and 17 at Fletton Parkway.

No one was injured in the collision.

A police spokesman said that delays caused by diversions set up to get traffic around the accident added to difficulties motorists were already facing as a result of ongoing roadworks on the opposite carriageway, and backlogs of traffic stretched into Peterborough.

The northbound carriageway was re-opened just after 4pm in time for the peak travel period as workers drove home.
